Volvo debuts all-new ES90

MANILA: Volvo has unveiled on global stage the all-new ES90 — a uniquely-shaped vehicle that combines the elements of a sedan, fastback, and some crossover proportions sprinkled in between. 

Regardless of what it really is, Volvo says it is its first-ever model to come with 800-volt electric vehicle (EV) technology. It is likewise poised as a versatile ride, allowing future adopters to go for “bigger adventures and families.” 

“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life,” Volvo Chief Executive Officer Jim Rowan said. 

“It joins the EX90 SUV (sports utility vehicle) as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing,” Rowan added. 

Exterior

As mentioned, the ES90 mixes the recognizable design details of a sedan, a fastback, and a crossover. 

Up front, it comes with a long hood and the car maker’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” headlamp design. It also has a rather flat-looking fascia and the usual closed-off grille of an EV. 

The side portion, meanwhile, comes with the sleek lines of a four-door sedan, which transitions to the dramatically sloped rear of a fastback. Also, the side view of the ride showcases its generous ground clearance of around 180 millimeters (mm). 

Likewise positioned on its rear end is a large and wide power tailgate and C-shaped LED taillights. The model also comes with additional rear-window LED lamps and a sleek rear bumper.

Interior

Step inside the ES90, and you’ll be greeted by a minimalist-looking cabin. Its visual style and arrangement are similar to the one found on the Volvo EX90, and it boasts plenty of soft-touch surfaces made out of responsibly sourced premium materials. 

All five occupants of the new Volvo EV are kept comfortable by a multi-zone automatic climate control system, an air quality system, a UV filtering panoramic sunroof, and Nordico leather-clad seats. 

The power-adjustable front seats, in particular, were designed by Volvo to optimize ergonomics. Both front and rear rows come with center armrests and access to type C USB ports. For the driver, it likewise has a power-adjustable steering column, keyless starting, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The main highlight of the ES90’s front cabin is a 14.5-inch vertically-oriented infotainment display. It boasts built-in Google software, and it provides wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The driver’s side, on the other hand, was provided with a 9.0-liter digital display and a heads-up display. 

Depending on the variant, the ES90 comes with a Bowers and Wilkins high-fidelity speaker set. As standard, the Volvo nameplate was kitted out with over-the-air update capabilities, 5G connectivity, wireless smartphone charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and digital audio broadcasting. 

Concerning luggage space, the vehicle has a default of 424 liters. With the rear seats folded down, the said space can be expanded to 733 liters. An additional 22 liters is likewise accessible via the model’s frunk. 

Safety

For its standard safety kit, the Volvo ES90 comes equipped with dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, a first aid kit, a 360-degree view camera, side airbags, occupant sensing, anti-whiplash system, anti-lock braking, and stability control - among others. 

The primary provider of on-board safety for the ES90, however, is its array of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), which include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Pilot Assist (semi-autonomous driving)
• Road sign recognition
• Rear cross-traffic alert
• Automatic emergency braking
• Collision avoidance and mitigation
• Pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance
• Driver monitoring
• Intersection autobrake
• Blind-spot information system

The aforementioned ADAS features are supported by Volvo’s core computing platform, which is powered by an Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chip. For sensing the outside world, the model also utilizes a total of five radars, seven cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a lidar system from Luminar Technologies. 

Powertrain

In its most powerful form as the top-spec Twin Motor Performance trim, the Volvo ES90 uses a twin-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup capable of outputting up to 680 horsepower and 870 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. Thanks to its beefy output, the model’s top-of-the-line version can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 5.3 seconds. 

For its base Single Motor Extended Range trim, the ES90 uses a rear-wheel-drive layout that can generate up to 333 hp and 480 Nm of torque. The mid-spec Twin Motor AWD, on the other hand, can put out up to 449 hp and 670 Nm of torque. 

Concerning range, the top-spec variant can cover up to 700 kilometers, as estimated by Volvo. The new EV architecture likewise enables the ES90 to add 300 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes of topping up via a 350-kilowatt fast charging station. 

Added efficiency for the vehicle is provided by its claimed drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25. It also boasts an active air suspension system for enhanced stability and ride comfort. 

Notably, the model has an “off-road” drive mode, which maximizes ground clearance and damping for rough roads.

Availability

At launch, the Volvo ES90 is now available for orders in select European markets. The brand also didn’t share any pricing details for the all-new ride. 

Volvo, however, shared that the EV will reach other territories around the world in 2026, and hopefully, it will also include the Philippines.
