EVs still require lubrication, JAMA execs say
EVs consume a third of fluids compared to ICE-powered automobiles

Executives from the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), which gave talks during the recent lube oil seminar sponsored by Petron, said that electric vehicles (EV) still require lubrication.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What part of an EV requires lubrication?
Per Saito, the part of an EV that needs lubrication is the e-Axle.Which dictates the type of fluid to be used on the e-Axle?
The type of fluid to be used on the e-Axle will be based on its format.
In his presentation, event speaker Takuma Saito talked about the trends in lubricant and additive technologies. Here he discussed that EVs, which use an e-Axle, require lubrication for friction control.
The lubricant is typically applied on the reduction gears of the e-Axle. The fluid, Saito pointed out, is based on the e-Axle format.
EVs consume a third of what ICEs use
Reinforcing what Saito said was Doctor Hitoshi Hamaguchi, who noted that EVs use lubricants that is approximately one third of what traditional internal combustion engine (ICE)-equipped automobiles use.
“Under the current information, the consumption of lubricants for electric vehicles is roughly one third of the current ICE cars,” Hamaguchi stated.

Since EVs have electric motors in lieu of ICEs, they do not need fluids like engine oils. While this affects the amount of fluids they use, it is important to consider that some components like the drivetrain, still needs to be lubed.
In the future, Hamaguchi explained that the need for EV lubricants might drop to at least 20 percent as more sustainable technologies are introduced.
