When it comes to premium hatchbacks, there are very few options available in the market, which offer the stance and levels of a premium feel-good factor as the Kia Rio does. The hatchback is fairly large and the dimensions along with the low slung stance give the Kia Rio a smart and authoritative road presence.
It’s not only the exteriors of the Kia Rio which make it a premium looking car, but the hatchback is also pretty impressive when you step in its cabin as well. The overall cabin layout not only feels wide and well-built, but also the presence of many premium bits like a touch screen infotainment system, keyless entry with push-button start and automatic climate control makes it feel like a car from one segment above.
While the large dimensions give the Kia Rio a good presence, they also play a major role in making the interior cabin vastly spacious as well. The Rio offers an impressive amount of legroom and knee room, which are comparable to an entry-level sedan positioned one price bracket above it.
The Kia Rio’s 1.4-litre engine is fairly decent when it comes to performance on tarmac, but the fuel efficiency in both manual, as well as automatic variants, are not too excellent to write about.
The Kia Rio feels upmarket and modern in each and every aspect, however, the instrument console design feels too plain and unattractive, which makes up for a boring looking driver’s cockpit.
KIA Rio April 2021 prices start from ₱920,000 for base variant 1.4 LX AT and goes upto ₱985,000 for top-spec variant 1.4 EX AT.

The Rio has been serving successfully as a volume bringer for Kia ever since its launch over the Picanto as a more premium hatchback. The spacious and well built large hatchback from Kia promises all the basic aspects which a family oriented buyer expects from a car. The Kia Rio is available in four different variants (SL MT, SL AT, DX AT, GL AT) and in eight different color options – Clear White, Silky Silver, Urban Green, Signal Red, Deep Sienna Brown, Smoke Blue, Platinum Graphite and Aurora Black Pearl.
The Kia Rio might be a budget hatchback aimed at large families. However, the build quality and fit and finish inside the cabin are quite exemplary and feels like it is a car from a segment above.
The slim looking steering wheel is loaded with buttons for audio, Bluetooth, cruise control, and voice recognition. However, the instrument console dilutes the sporty essence of the driver’s cockpit generated by the steering wheel, and looks too plain for anyone’s liking.
The centre console looks wide thanks to the large 2-DIN audio system flanked by two vertical AC vents. However, we would have loved to see a touchscreen unit here, given the current trend.
The Kia Rio comes packed with some really nice features like push-button start with keyless entry, fully automatic climate control, cooled glove box, rain sensing wipers, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel, and driver seat height adjustment.
The Kia Rio is well proportioned and feels like a car from one segment above, owing to its premium styling, and large dimensions.
At the front, the Rio comes with Kia’s traditional ‘tiger-nose’ grille, albeit in a longitudinally stretched form, which gives it an impression of a very wide car. The swept back headlamps come integrated with projector headlights with daytime running LEDs, thus adding the premium appeal of Rio.
The side profile of the Kia Rio doesn’t come with any prominent character line, which makes it look too sober and dilutes the aggression of the front stance. However, the large 17-inch alloy wheels do give it a sportier stance.
At the rear, the Kia Rio looks a bit bland with a plain rear hatch with large bulbous looking tail lamps with LED inserts on either side. However, the rounded profile with roof-mounted spoiler gives it a squat stance when viewed from the rear.
Based on the Hyundai i20 hatchback, the Kia Rio inherits all the positive traits of the former. The front Macpherson struts with stabilizer and rear coupled torsion beam axle are tuned on a softer edge to impart a plush ride quality over all kinds of roads. However, the steering lacks the precision and might feel wallow at higher speeds. Space inside is adequate for five passengers.
The Kia Rio is being offered with just one engine option. Sourced from Hyundai, the 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine employed for the job is adequate enough to produce a maximum power output of 100 PS and a peak torque of 134Nm. The engine has got two transmission options on offer. While the base variant (SL MT) comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, the rest of the three are equipped with a 4-speed torque converter.
The Kia Rio is kitted with all the basic essentials, keeping the pricing in check. The list of safety equipment in the Rio includes dual front airbags, ABS, ISOFIX mounts for child seats, keyless entry with alarm, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, and reverse parking sensors.
To sum it up, the Kia Rio hits the sweet spot by getting all the basic aspects right. The hatchback feels well-built in and out, has a powerful engine under the hood, is packed with essential comfort, convenience and safety features and looks the part too. The Rio might not emerge out as a driver’s delight, owing to the very plush suspension setting and soft steering setup, however, rest assured, it does prove itself as a very practical option for a family oriented buyer.
The Kia Rio hatchback has a great cabin which makes you want to travel in it repeatedly. Right from the build quality, the materials used on the dashboard, the instrument knob, buttons and almost everything has a premium feel. There’s enough space for 5 persons to travel comfortably. The Rio hatchback offers nice handling. Hatchbacks are ideal city cars that
Now this car is something worth mentioning about. I had no plan to buy a car this year. Last year only I have purchased an esteemed car from Honda stable and am quite happy with it. In spite of that, I could not resist myself when I got to see this car in their showroom. I just casually hopped in
Kia Rio is a fantastic car. It is inexpensive and very economical to drive. The cabin look and feel is very good as well. I personally love the cockpit that is designed in a manner to limit manual and visual distractions. There is enough room for my entire family, and making the experience even better is the auto air-con system
I always bought Japanese cars due to their reliability and low cost of maintenance, but when I was in the market for a new car, I was very impressed with the Kia Rio. After talking to several of my friends and family members, I took a risk and bought the Rio. It has been 8 months now and the car
I went in with low expectations for the Rio but then ended up buying one! It is a very well rounded package and hard to fault. It looks great both on the inside and out with good build quality all round. Perhaps the engine performance could have been a bit better, but for most it is great. The 5-year warranty
If you are fond of Kia’s premium range of cars you will surely get fascinated with the car at the very first glimpse. I am a hardcore Kia fan. So drool over there major makes. Recently when I was wondering on which car to opt for I thought why not something from Kia this time. Thought to pamper myself to
When my wife and I were looking to buy our first car, we wanted something roomy yet compact. After several months of debating, we decided on the Kia Rio. It fits all our requirements: looks, safety, reliability, space and features. As expected with any first car, we love the Rio and go out on trips whenever the opportunity arises. We
I must say that this is the most handsome car from the generation. I think I was pretty sure to buy this car when I entered the showroom. It was my anniversary day and me and my wife just went through the showrooms to book a car for us. My concern was that the car should be smooth and cost
A beautiful car that provides you with a sense of tranquility while you drive this. You must be wondering what all I am blabbering about? Well Kia Rio has been wonderfully made with the prevention mechanism of outside sound. So while you drive this car you can easily avoid the outside hustle and bustle of the world and get soaked
While I first saw this car displayed on a magazine cover I was literally spell bound. The car looks way beautiful and refined than you can think of. This car surely is a head turner even amidst dense traffic. This much I was pretty sure about the moment I saw it. Then I enquired further about this car on internet
