Recent Updates of KIA Sorento

Kia recently introduced the 2019 model year of the Sorento in some Asian countries. The new Kia Sorento is offered in two variants –  a 2.4 EX and 2.2D SX. As can be guessed from the name, the Sorento EX is powered by a 2.4-litre Theta II MPI four-cylinder petrol engine. This mill produces 172 PS of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 225 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine is paired to a six-speed automatic and comes along with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system. The 2.2D SX trim gets the new eight-speed auto 2.2-litre R turbodiesel unit with start/stop functionality. It makes 200 PS at 3,800 rpm and 442 Nm from 1,750 to 2,750 rpm. The all-new Sorento benefits from some fantastic style revisions like adaptive LED headlamps, LED fog lamps with “ice cube” look, new taillight graphics, and revised rear bumper.

In the Philippines market, Kia still offers the second-gen model, and we hope to get our hands on the new Sorento sometime this year.

Overview

The Sorento is the flagship SUV from Kia Motors, which is one of the most significant product in order to upstage the premium image of Kia. This Korean car has all the entry-level compact SUVs from the European bigwigs in its sights, however, it does manage to trump them with its big size and more kit on offer. The Kia Sorento is being offered in one standard variant, with only one engine-gearbox option, and seven color choices, namely Aurora Black Pearl, Graphite Blue, Metal Stream, Platinum Graphite, Rich Espresso, Silky Silver, and Snow White Pearl.

Interior & Features

It is on the inside where the things get even more old school for the Sorento. The interior cabin feels well built and exudes top-class quality, however, it just doesn’t feel modern enough in terms of layout and list of features on board.

The four-spoke steering wheel looks archaic, and so does the three-pod instrument console behind it. However, the dual tone theme for the interior cabin with a fake wood insert line running in between adds some posh feel to the cabin.

The centre console feels a bit dated, with a very simple looking touchscreen infotainment system taking the centre stage. The AC vents do get premium looking silver surrounds around them.

The Sorento is adequately equipped with some very premium features like full leather upholstery, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, cruise control, seat height adjustment, and the basics. However, we would have definitely loved to see a few more modern features to make this cabin feel contemporary and up-to-date.

Exterior

On the outside, the Kia Sorento manages to get the road presence right with its large dimensions. However, the overall styling is slightly dated in today’s day and age, it lacks the sharpness and bling of the modern SUVs.

At the front, the Kia Sorento is blessed with the trademark “tiger-nose” front grille, which here is quite large and wide and is garnished with plenty of chrome to make it look premium. The headlamps look quite sleek with LED headlamps and daytime running LED strips within them. The vertical housing for fog lamps and large air dams at the front bumper make it look sportier when viewed head-on.

From the sides, the Kia Sorento carries forward the curvaceous appeal of the front and looks quite humongous, thanks to the long wheelbase and large 17-inch alloy wheels. The chrome garnish on the door handles and shoulder-line adds a premium touch to the otherwise simple looking side profile.

At the rear too, the Kia Sorento looks a bit old school, thanks to the squared design for the tail lamps and trapezoidal housing for the license plate. The rear windscreen looks quite wide, thus making the Sorento look large from the rear.

Ride & Handling

Talking about the suspension, the Kia Sorento is endowed with MacPherson Strut with Dual Flow Damper (DFD) and stabilizer at the front and Multi-link with Dual Flow Damper (DFD) at the rear. Owing to its monocoque construction, the body roll is well under control. Adding to its driver-friendly nature is a small turning radius of 5.6 meter.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Powering the Kia Sorento is a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine sourced from Hyundai, which happens to be the only engine option on offer. Mated to a brilliant 8-speed automatic gearbox, this engine feels very refined and generates a maximum power output of 200 PS and a peak torque of 440 Nm.

Braking & Safety

Like the comfort and convenience features list, the safety equipment list on the Kia Sorento too feels a bit lacking. The SUV misses out on several new-age passive safety features, but still is decently equipped with basic features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, keyless entry, reverse parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts for child seats.

Verdict

The Kia Sorento might look authoritative owing to its nice street presence and dimensions. However, it does lack the modernity and pampering of a modern-day seven-seat SUV, thanks to the absence of many contemporary features. The Sorento, though, has got all the mechanical aspects at the right spot, with the space, comfort, ride quality, and handling in check.
