Commuters are the bread and butter of motorcycle manufacturers in Asian markets. Yamaha has also populated their catalogues with affordable commuters. Arguably, however, they have not been the best at it. The Yamaha SZ was launched in 2010 in India in just such an attempt. In India, it was largely overshadowed by Bajaj and Hero motorcycles. Yamaha then tried to keep the bike refreshed by introducing many different variants that were supposed to cater to different segments of buyers. Most of these were often impossible to tell apart from. While this did not help its cause that much in India, it did seem to work in the Philippines. The SZ on sale in the country today is like the amalgamation of the best features of these many different versions. While this does make it a good bike, does it make it a good buy? In the Philippines, it is on sale for around Php 69,000. At this range, it competes against the smaller displacement Kawasaki Rouser 135 LS.
The SZ can be considered as the mild-mannered cousin of the FZ in more ways than one. If the FZ catered to the youth enthusiast rider, the SZ was aimed at a more mature audience. This and the constant updates it received over the years have now given it many small details. Yet, it is still a commuter motorcycle. Styling is not exactly its forte. There are three color options to choose from – Matte Green, Matte Black and Vivid Red Cocktail. The blacked out components and wheels, go well with the different color schemes. The bike gets a conventional headlight with a smoked mini visor at the front. The muscular arrow shaped tank with its extensions, 3D emblems and striking graphics is probably the most stylish part of the bike. The rear gets a split aluminum grab rail. Panels in the side also increase its style quotient. The long beefy silencer with a heat guard that makes it look like a minigun. At 1990 mm long, 750 mm wide and 1100 mm tall, the bike is compact enough for city traffic. The 165 mm of ground clearance makes for relaxed travelling over bad roads. The bike rides on 17-inch wheels with 2.75 41P front and 100/90 55P rear tyres. The bike is built to a cost and still comes with an analog instrument panel. There is the usual speedometer, odometer and fuel indicator along with a tachometer.
For a commuter bike, good ergonomics cannot be compromised on. And for the most part, the SZ does a good job. The seating position is upright and handlebars are high. Combined with the footpeg position as well as the comfortable seat, the ride is relaxed and easy. The one glaring misstep is the seat height, which is 800 mm. This will not be appreciated by riders of short height. Otherwise the bike with its 1320 mm wheelbase yet slim profile is easy to maneuver around town and city traffic. The conventional suspension setup with telescopic front forks and dual shock absorbers in the rear, do a good job of absorbing bumps. Again this is a commuter with not very wide tires. So this is best suited for comfortable commuting and not much else.
The engine is the same as can be found on the old FZ. Here though it has been detuned to increase mileage. It also misses out on fuel injection. Expecting liquid cooling would be hysterical. The 149 cc 2 valve SOHC engine produces 12.1 PS at just 7500 rpm. Torque of 12.8 Nm is similarly delivered at a low 6000 rpm. The engine is not the most refined unit. Some vibrations do make it to the handlebars and the foot pegs. But the engine performs as it should otherwise. Power delivery is quick and it does come with a 5 speed transmission. There is enough grunt to go over inclines with a pillion. The bike also comes with both a kick and an electric starter. The engine uses Yamaha’s Blu Core tech to increase mileage. That figure here happens to be 55 kmpl which is very commendable for a bike with 150 cc and no fuel injection.
There is a drum brake on the rear and a hydraulic disc brake on the front. The brakes are good enough for their intended purpose.
There have been instances of quality related issues which is expected from a Yamaha bike. For what you get, it might appear to be slightly pricey too. Then there is the whole issue of the usability of a motorcycle as opposed to a scooter for commuting in stop and go traffic of the Philippines. If you want a commuter bike despite these caveats, then do give this bike a shot.
I am quite pleased with the style signature of this bike which has a great similarity with its big sibling Yamaha FZ. Say the bike is well decked with side covers and angular shaped headlamps. One admirable part of the model is they have nicely sculpted its fuel tank so that thighs can be positioned with convenience. The dual tone
The Yamaha SZ is one of the highest selling bikes in the Philippines. This everyday commuter bike is probably the best designed, comes with the most detailed graphic body, and is paired to a reliable 150cc engine. I’ve been using this bike for over a year now and have covered roughly 10,000+ kms in the bike and I must admit,
The Yamaha SZ is Yamaha's most affordable commuter offering in the 150cc segment. It is known for its comfortable ride, reliability, visual appeal, and safety features that it adds to the everyday ride of the Philippino’s. I have been an avid user of the bike for over a year now and I feel that this bike has every element which
I have been using my Yamaha SZ for about eight years now, and I have to admit that this ride is the best for practical use. Of course, I have used my share of sports bikes, but after a certain age, I guess we choose practicality and mileage over anything else. This is how I ended up buying my Yamaha
The Yamaha SZ is actually a dual-purpose bike. Most people use it for daily commuting and so do I. But it can be used for casual racing once in a while. To serve the dual-purpose, Yamaha has lent a sporty look to the SZ. The pickup is great. I haven’t seen any other 150cc bike with such a good pickup.
The Yamaha SZ is the most affordable bike in its class. But that doesn’t mean it looks drab and dated. It has a balanced look of a daily commuter and a sports bike. The SZ is for the working class that wants an efficient mode of personal transport regularly. I have been riding the bike since 2017 and it has
Whenever I buy a bike I ensure the machine should look sleek and stunning. Side by side, I go by the convenience of sitting posture also. This time my priorities were the same while I decided to go for Yamaha SZ. The headlamp of the vehicle looks a bit exclusive but I loved the shape. The fuel tank has been
Overall this bike looks cool. I find the headlamp shape is somewhat weird though. The fuel tank looks well proportionate and it has been designed in such a manner that I can place my thighs on it and get set for a comfortable ride. I also love the tail lamp designs. They have split the lights into two by placing
The Yamaha SZ is another offering by the automaker that adds to the practical design in the segment. The automaker has done a great job in engineering the bike, keeping in mind, all the aspects of design, comfort, and convenience. I’ve been using the bike for almost a year now and it has been my daily commuter. The bike gives
