10 new car models to watch out for in MIAS 2023

The Manila International Auto Show is one of the most anticipated car events of the year for Philippine car culture. For years, it has been the staging ground for many car brands to launch new and, at times, iconic models. The 2022 event was sort of a comeback party after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic and we saw a lot of launches that changed the landscape of the local market. This year promises to be so much bigger and more diverse than the last!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Which vehicle models are confirmed to have their launch at MIAS 2023?

The launch of Peugeot e-2008 and GAC Emkoo have been confirmed by Astara Philippines. Jetour has also announced the launch of the Ice Cream EV at the event.
  • Which vehicle models have high possibility of making their Philippine debut at MIAS 2023?

There is a high possibility for the next-gen Ford Territory, Haval H6, and Haval Jolion to make their Philippine debut at MIAS 2023, however, their companies have not confirmed it yet.
  • For the past few months, we have been hearing rumors and confirmed releases from the different participating car brands about the cars they would be showcasing at the event. With each passing day, it leaves car fans such as myself yearning for even more information. In no particular order, here are 10 of the most exciting models from the participating car brands that may or may not be making an appearance at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show as well as the hype level they are bringing with them!

    Ford Territory

In a surprise move from Ford, they will be launching the second-generation Ford Territory this month and will most likely be showcased to the public at this year’s MIAS. The first-generation Territory has been the brand’s runaway hit and has been the best-selling compact crossover SUV for the past few years thanks to a combination of svelte looks, interior amenities that have only been available on more high-end vehicles, excellent space and great fuel economy all at a low price point.

    Ford Territory on the Road2

Ford Philippines has now revealed some of the details regarding the all-new Ford Territory but have held back on some key specs for a later date. Already released in other ASEAN countries, the Ford Territory is based on the Ford Equator Sport, a five-row crossover SUV with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. This new engine packs a bigger punch making 168hp and about 260Nm of torque, figures which are much higher than the outgoing model. It’s also increased in size by just a little bit from the current model but thanks to its boxier styling looks much more rugged and now puts it in line with Ford Philippines’ current crop of models. Reservations are now open and still offered at a surprisingly low price tag, which leads me to believe that this might just be another blockbuster hit for the brand.

    Certainty Factor: 5/5

    Ford Ranger Raptor

If there has ever been one model from Ford Philippines’ lineup from the past few years that has gained an epic or iconic status in the local car scene, that would be the Ford Ranger Raptor and what’s not to love about it? For under P2 million, buyers had a compact sports truck with a bi-turbo diesel engine that made around 210hp and 500Nm of torque. It was fitted with Fox-branded suspension, a wider body, and different Drive modes including the insane “Baja” mode. Out of the box it was one of the most capable mid-sized passenger trucks available. When Ford Philippines removed it from their listings a few months ago, we knew that it was just a matter of time before the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor will be revealed.

    Ford Ranger Raptor

Fast forward to today, and the Ford Ranger Raptor, although not yet announced by Ford Philippines, has already made an appearance in other ASEAN countries. The newer model has two engine options, a twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 as well as the same bi-turbo diesel engine from the previous model. We would love to see the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor be previewed in some way at the 2023 MIAS, but again, Ford Philippines has not announced anything.

    Certainty Factor: 3/5

    Nissan Z

In its media thanksgiving event in February, Nissan Philippines President Juan Manuel Hoyos stated that customers can expect “speed, excitement, and performance” in the two new models that it will release this year. We are guessing that one of those will be the 2023 Nissan Z and the MIAS will be the perfect venue for its Philippine debut.

The 2023 Nissan Z delivers the “speed, excitement, and performance” that we are looking forward to with its 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine that delivers 400hp and 474Nm of torque and is mated to either a nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters or a six-speed manual transmission.

    Nissan Z

The 2023 Nissan Z comes with a mechanical limited-slip differential that aids in distributing power to the driven wheel with the best grip. It also has an available launch control that helps in reducing the wheel spin and hop by holding the engine at a pre-set rpm.

Although we are not too sure if Nissan will indeed launch the Z at MIAS, we are still hoping that it will hit the local market soon.

    Certainty Factor: 3/5

    Nissan X-Trail e-Power

As for the second model that the Nissan Philippines chief is referring to, we think that it might be the 2023 Nissan X-Trail e-Power.

The 2023 Nissan X-Trail features the second-generation e-Power system, which delivers improved power and smoothness. e-Power was first introduced in the local market with the 2022 Nissan Kicks.

    2023 Nissan X-Trail

Similar to the Nissan Kicks, the 2023 Nissan X-Trail also comes with the e-Pedal Step. With this feature, drivers only need to use the accelerator pedal to speed up or slow down. As a result, driving in various situations, whether in cities or on highways, is much more convenient because there is less of a need to switch from one pedal to another.

The 2023 Nissan X-Trail also delivers enhanced acceleration, cornering, and braking capabilities, thanks to the e-4orce technology that combines Nissan’s electric power, four-wheel drive management, and chassis-control technologies.

With all these tech upgrades, the 2023 Nissan X-Trail will surely captivate the interests of Filipino SUV fans.

    Certainty Factor: 3/5

    Peugeot e-2008

Astara Philippines has already confirmed the arrival of the all-electric Peugeot e-2008 at this year’s MIAS. The company has not yet revealed the specs of the upcoming compact electric SUV, but it will probably be almost the same as its international version.

The Peugeot e-2008 is powered by an electric motor that produces 130hp and 260Nm of torque. It also comes with a 50kWh battery that enables a range of 345km. The Peugeot e-2008 can be charged to 80% for as fast as 30 minutes using a 100kW fast-charging DC charger.

    Peugeot e-2008

In terms of design, the Peugeot e-2008 features the same powerful stance as its petrol version, but it is distinguished by a body-colored checkered front grille with an “e” monogram on the front side panel and tailgate.

The Peugeot e-2008 also comes with the new Peugeot i-Cockpit that includes a compact steering wheel, 10-inch HD capacitive touchscreen, and 3D digital dash, making driving intuitive and convenient.

According to Peugeot, the entry of the Peugeot e-2008 in the local market ushers in the era of electrification of the brand’s lineup in the Philippines.

    Certainty Factor: 5/5

    GAC Emkoo

The arrival of the 2023 GAC Emkoo at this year’s MIAS was also announced by Astara Philippines. GAC Motor’s newest crossover will headline the brand’s booth at the event, showcasing its sleek, futuristic looks and state-of-the-art technology.

    GAC Emkoo

The GAC Emkoo made its global debut in China in 2022. It was introduced with three engine options: a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, a two-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, and a mild-hybrid two-liter engine with an electric motor. However, GAC Motor Philippines has not yet confirmed whether all these engine variants will be offered in the local market.

GAC Motor describes the 2023 GAC Emkoo as the expression of its bold and futuristic new style for its global SUVs.

    Certainty Factor: 5/5

    Subaru Outback

The latest generation of Subaru Outback may also possibly be unveiled at this year’s MIAS, however, no announcement has been made by Subaru Philippines yet.

    2023 Subaru Outback

One of the recent appearances of the 2023 Subaru Outback was at the Singapore Motorshow 2023, where it showcased its sophisticated yet adventurous character. Among the updates it received are the auto-restore X-Mode, new Type C USB charging ports, UI upgrades for the infotainment system, driver’s multi-information display, and steering wheel control changes.

The 2023 Subaru Outback will probably retain the same 2.5-liter direct injection Boxer engine as the previous-generation model.

    Certainty Factor: 2/5

    Haval H6

Another EV that will reportedly make its public debut at this year’s MIAS is the Haval H6, brought in by Chinese auto manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM). GWM arrived in the Philippines last month, promising a new mobility experience through new energy and technology.

The Haval H6, GWM’s flagship model in the country, is built on a cutting-edge platform that GWM independently developed from a global perspective. This platform has earned excellent safety ratings and perfectly fits with new energy powertrains.

    Haval H6 Hybrid

Under the hood of the Haval H6 is a 1.5-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine mated to a 130kW Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. It produces a combined output of 240hp and 530Nm of torque. This hybrid system enables smoother power delivery, reduced carbon emissions, and 35% to 50% fuel savings.

The Haval H6 also comes standard with advanced driver-assist technologies such as Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition and Fatigue Monitoring standard.

    Certainty Factor: 4/5

    Haval Jolion

Haval H6 will likely be joined by the brand’s most innovative premium B-SUV, the Haval Jolion. In a media preview last month, GWM unveiled the hybrid variant of the Haval Jolion.

The Haval Jolion is based on the same platform as the Haval H6. It is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated internal combustion engine paired to a 115kW Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, allowing it to deliver a combined output of 186hp and 375Nm of torque.

    Haval H6 and Haval Jolion

The Haval Jolion offers a driver-centric cockpit with ergonomic seats, a large multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and wireless charging. It also boasts cutting-edge technologies such as a 360-degree Around View Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, and level 2 autonomous driving capabilities.

    Certainty Factor: 4/5

    Jetour Ice Cream EV

Chinese brand Jetour will also make its official debut in the country at this year’s MIAS, and one of its initial offerings will be the cute yet boxy Jetour Ice Cream EV.

The Jetour Ice Cream EV will be one of the most affordable EV models in the local market, as it retails for only P699,000. This two-door, four-seater small car measures 2,980mm long, 1,496mm wide, and 1,637mm tall. It has a 1,960mm wheelbase and 120mm ground clearance.

    Jetour Ice Cream EV

Nothing is special about the interior of the Jetour Ice Cream EV, but it has a reverse camera and a USB charging port. The rear seats can also be folded down if extra cargo space is needed.

The Jetour Ice Cream EV is driven by a 20kW electric motor that produces 27ps and 85Nm of torque. The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 9.6kWh to 13.9kWh. When fully charged, the Jetour Ice Cream EV can reach 120km to 170km, depending on the battery pack. It also has a top speed of 100kph.

With its budget-friendly price tag, the Jetour Ice Cream EV is definitely a great option for those who want to try going electric.

    Certainty Factor: 5/5

With all the new product (and brand) launches, MIAS 2023 is definitely something that Filipino car enthusiasts shouldn’t miss. Attendees can also look forward to all the car displays, stunt show, competition, and test drive activities that will happen on the four-day event.

MIAS 2023 will happen on April 13 to 16 at World Trade Center in Pasay City. Tickets are now available on its official website.
