Cash-crushing crossovers: Ford EcoSport vs. Chery Tiggo 2 vs. Toyota Raize

Cash-crushing crossovers: Ford EcoSport vs. Chery Tiggo 2 vs. Toyota Raize

Most sub-P700,000 cars comprise of small sedans and hatchbacks. And while those cars have their own merits, those looking for the style, space, and ride height of an SUV might have to look elsewhere.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the starting prices of the Ford EcoSport, Chery Tiggo 2, and Toyota Raize?

The EcoSport and Raize start at P750,000 and P746,000, respectively. The Tiggo 2 retails for P695,000.
  • What are the ground clearance measurements of the EcoSport, Tiggo 2, and Raize?

The EcoSport clears the ground at 209mm, and the Raize at 200mm. Meanwhile, the Tiggo 2 offers 186mm of ground clearance.
  • But these buyers don't need to look too far. After all, there are loads of subcompact crossovers in the market that retail below P800,000 — and still the choices are multiplying.

The recently-launched Toyota Raize is attempting to steal a slice of the sales pie away from current models, examples of which are the Ford EcoSport and Chery Tiggo 2

But which of them best bring big SUV benefits at small-car sizes and prices?

Starting at P750,000, the EcoSport is the baby in Ford's range. It was launched in 2014, so the EcoSport is considered to have started the local small crossover frenzy.

The EcoSport attempts to belie its dinky dimensions with a front end with a larger grille, new alloy wheel design, and a reskinned rear bumper, all of which were added during a mid-life refresh. The spare tire mounted on the sideways-opening tailgate is a throwback to SUVs of yesteryear.

Ford EcoSport Ford EcoSport Titanium Ford EcoSportWhile the top-tier EcoSport is equipped with Sync3 infotainment, the EcoSport Trend isn't too far behind with the essentials. These include a nine-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and audio controls in the tiller.

The EcoSport Trend is powered by a 1.5-liter engine, which sends 125hp and 150Nm of torque to the front wheels via a five-speed manual. While the front rollers might relegate the car to paved roads, the 209-millimeter ground clearance can still handle light off-roading.

Over at the relatively new brand Chery, the Tiggo 2 is, well, the smallest produce of the bunch. The Tiggo 2 starts at P695,000.

Like many Chinese cars, the Tiggo 2's looks are distinctive. C-shape design elements on the headlights, LED daytime running lights (DRL), and taillights adorn the exterior. The black body cladding and silver roof rails make the Tiggo 2 appear more like an SUV.

Chery Tiggo 2 Chery Tiggo 2 Pro Chery Tiggo 2

Even in entry-level MT trim, the Tiggo 2 is well-equipped with touchscreen infotainment, intelligent and tailgate remote key, and multifunction steering wheel controls. An orange and black color scheme brightens up the cabin.

Under the Tiggo 2 MT’s hood is a 1.5-liter engine that delivers 106hp and 135Nm. A five-speed manual should eke out the best economy from the 50-liter fuel tank that's paired to the engine. But when the Tiggo 2 is driven more adventurously than economically, the car's 186mm ground clearance should be up to the job.

Next in the lineup of cash-saving crossovers is the Raize, which starts at P746,000. Now, considering that the price is on par with the Vios — the country's best-selling car — then Toyota has a potential strong-seller in its hands (and it expects to sell 1,000 units of the model a month — Ed.).

The styling can surely attract buyers, too. The Raize wears a triangular front air dam flanked by triangular fog light housing, which comprise of the Toyota family face. Out back, the Raize's wraparound rear windscreen could be a nod to the old Fortuner.

In the equipment front, the entry-level Raize E is equipped with an Apple CarPlay- and Android Auto-enabled eight-inch touchscreen infotainment and manual climate control. Meanwhile, safety features of the Raize E consists of two airbags, immobilizer, and reversing sensors.

The Raize E is motivated by a 1.2-liter, naturally-aspirated, three-cylinder engine that produces 88hp and 113Nm of torque. Obviously, the Raize's headline turbo one-liter isn't in this dogfight, but the Raize E's five-speed manual should provide some driving thrills. And at least the Raize E shares a 200mm ground clearance with its siblings.

Now we've got the highlights covered, let's recall the original question: which among the entry-level EcoSport, Tiggo 2, and Raize represents the best value-for-money? The answer lies in the spec sheets of these three models.
