Here’s what to expect on the road this Holy Week

Heavier traffic, crowded destinations to be expected this Lenten break

Here’s what to expect on the road this Holy Week

The long Holy Week break is fast approaching, and that means plenty of Filipinos are cramming to leave the metro for a much-needed break to hit the beach, visit relatives, or take on a spiritual pilgrimage.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What smartphone application can help motorists take full advantage of MPTC's services?

MPTC has a mobile phone application where one can access its services called MPT DriveHub.
  • Where can motorists set an appointment to get an RFID sticker?

RFID sticker appointments are available through ORRAS via the MPT DriveHub app.
  • On that note, here is a list from MPT Mobility — Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation’s (MPTC) digital mobility solutions arm — that will help you with what to anticipate this long weekend.

    Heavier traffic

With plenty of Filipinos looking to escape the busy cities, it’s no secret that major expressways become jam-packed during the Holy Week.

That said, making preparations beforehand can ensure faster travel and less hassle while on the road. The MPT DriveHub app can help motorists reload Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) accounts and get regular traffic updates across MPTC expressways.

Vehicles without an RFID sticker can visit the EasyTrip website or book an appointment through the Online RFID Reservation and Appointment System (ORRAS) via MPT DriveHub.

    Crowded destinations

Along with heavier traffic are more crowded destinations. From beach resorts to pilgrimage sites, expect these places to be filled with people who are all trying to catch a break and make lasting memories with friends and family.

Patience and planning will go a long way, so if possible, book activities in advance (to avoid long lines) and stay away from peak hours if you can.

It is also important to consider bringing extra snacks, medicines, and beverages if you are traveling with kids and seniors, as convenience stores might also be packed during these times.

    Book your stay in advance

Hotels and resorts tend to fill up during the Holy Week, especially in popular destinations like Tagaytay, Baguio, or La Union.

That said, it would be wise to consider alternative stays or explore lesser-known spots rather than banking on last-minute deals — which can sometimes be costly.

Reduced operating hours in city establishments

Malls, convenience stores, and even groceries usually run on reduced operating hours during the Lenten break.

On that note, it is a good idea to plan your stops and stock up on essentials before hitting the road.

And if you’re heading back to Manila after the break, the North Luzon Expressway Drive and Dine is a convenient spot to grab a quick meal or take a breather before reaching the metro.

    Increased police presence

It is also normal to see increased police visibility during the Holy Week, with more checkpoints across tollways and terminals.

The government usually has programs to aid motorists and ensure order during this time of religious exodus. Likewise, private companies like MPTC also roll out initiatives such as the Arangkada Assistance Program — formerly known as Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko — which has been around since 2007.

    Prepare for weather changes

Though it's summer, April marks the start of the dry-to-wet season shift, and a sunny morning can quickly turn into a rainy afternoon.

With that said, it can be helpful to pack umbrellas or raincoats just in case and double-check weather forecasts before heading out.
