Aston Martin launches DBX S

V8 ride boasts twin-turbo setup from Valhalla supercar

Aston Martin launches DBX S

MANILA: Aston Martin has debuted the DBX S, a new version that towers over the older DBX707 when it comes to producing power.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much horsepower and torque can the Aston Martin DBX S produce?

The Aston Martin DBX S can produce up to 717 horsepower 900 Newton-meters of torque.
  • How did Aston Martin improve the engine used by the new DBX S?

Aston Martin improved the engine in the new DBX S by equipping it with a similar twin-turbo setup to the Valhalla supercar.
  • As claimed by the British marque, the latest variant of the high-performance sport utility vehicle (SUV) boasts a powertrain that was enhanced with technologies derived from the Valhalla supercar.

Apart from its very potent powertrain, the Aston Martin DBX S also promises to deliver an exciting and engaging drive, thanks to its reduced weight and more impactful exterior design.

So, what is the Aston Martin DBX S offering to prospective buyers?

    Exterior

While the Aston Martin DBX S retains the same rakish proportions as the standard DBX707, it was improved further by several choice upgrades.

For starters, it can now be made lighter thanks to an optional carbon fiber roof, which the British carmaker says can help shave off 18 kilograms of mass. The said part partially deletes the model’s roof rails, but it lowers its center of gravity. The aforementioned, Aston Martin pointed out, helps in improving its stability.

Additional weight savings for the ride are provided by an optional 23-inch set of magnesium wheels, which is touted to be 75 percent lighter than steel. It likewise sports a lightweight polycarbonate grille.

For its stylistic details, the high-performance SUV was fitted with a pure black vaned grille, upturned air splitters, and chrome-plated “S” signature badging on the front fenders.

Other optional equipment for the new DBX707 trim includes side strakes, side mirrors, rear bumper, and lower door sills, all hewn from carbon fiber.

As a result of the aforementioned, the vehicle tips the scale at 2,198 kilograms (kg) - 100 kg less than the standard Aston Martin DBX.

    Interior

For its cabin, the Aston Martin DBX S pretty much carried over most of the standard trim’s features. It was, however, upgraded with a “bespoke S theme” that features a herringbone design for the front seats, as well as several “S” plaques scattered throughout its interior.

Similar to the regular DBX707, the new DBX S comes with heavily bolstered sport seats with power adjustability, as well as leather or Alcantara upholstery. Other notable features inside the model also include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • 10.25-inch digital driver’s display
    • 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • Automatic triple-zone air-conditioning system
    • Bowers and Wilkins 23-piece speaker set (optional)
    • Smartphone charging pad
    • Keyless start
    • Heated rear window
    • Ambient lighting

    Safety

As of the global launch of the DBX S, Aston Martin did not share a complete list of safety features. Take note, however, that the standard DBX707 has six airbags, anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, vehicle stability control, traction control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a 360-degree view camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Furthermore, the non-S trim of the nameplate has several advanced driver-assist systems, such as:

    • Adaptive cruise control
    • Traffic sign recognition
    • Blind-spot monitoring
    • Automatic emergency braking
    • Lane departure warning
    • Lane keep assist
    • Rear-cross traffic alert
    • Speed limiter

    Powertrain

As mentioned above, the 4.0-liter V8 of the Aston Martin DBX S was provided with technologies from the Valhalla. Specifically, it received the supercar’s beefy twin-turbo setup, which boasts larger compressor wheel diameters, among a host of “other internal improvements.”

Output-wise, the DBX S can generate up to 717 horsepower 900 Newton-meters of torque

For reference, the Aston Martin DBX707 can make up to 697 hp, which is 20 hp less than the new DBX S.

Power is sent to all four of its wheels via an all-wheel-drive system that can evenly distribute force to the vehicle’s front and rear. The said part didn’t change at all, but Aston Martin gave the new trim a modified exhaust system to provide what the brand has described as “thunderous” sound.

Additionally, Aston Martin shared that it upgraded the new trim’s nine-speed automatic transmission in order to accommodate the vehicle’s larger pair of twin turbos. When using the vehicle’s Sport and Sport+ drive modes, it can likewise return more aggressive downshifts.

For snappier handling and better on-road stability, the DBX S was also kitted out with newly calibrated air springs and electronic dampers. Depending on the drive mode, the suspension system’s spring rates can be switched up for improved traction and body roll stiffness.

Stopping power, for the Aston Martin DBX S, meanwhile, is handled by a pair of 420-millimeter front and 390-mm rear carbon ceramic disc brakes.

Here is a table summarizing the mechanical specifications of the Aston Martin DBX S:
