Audi marks F1 debut

MANILA: Last weekend marked the debut of Audi in the Formula 1 (F1) series as a works team.

In its maiden race at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Gabriel Bortoleto immediately scored six points for the Four Rings after crossing the checkered flag in ninth place.

In a report, the Brazilian driver expressed elation over the finish. “I’m extremely happy and the team deserves it,” Bortoleto was quoted as saying.

“A lot of hard work has been put in. Reliable car, reliable engine – a great point to start,” he added.

To note, the powertrain that the Audi Revolut F1 Team utilizes is a combination of a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor that is almost as powerful as a pure combustion mill. The increased output from the electric motor means that more energy can be recovered through recuperation. The engine runs on sustainable fuels.

Further, the powertrain the team used is the first one in F1 history that has been developed and built in Germany—creating another milestone for both the brand and  racing series.

Meanwhile, Audi AG Chief Executive Officer Gernot Döllner said that the brand’s start in the pinnacle of motorsport worldwide marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company — on and off the track.

 “We aim to demonstrate what can be achieved when people work together towards a common goal. In this sport, where every millisecond counts, efficiency is crucial. It teaches us that focused, precise teamwork makes us strong. We face the challenges with courage and view this project as a driving force and motivating example to become better every day.”

In a statement, Audi noted that it is eyeing Formula 1 world championship titles from 2030 onward.

The Ingolstadt-headquartered marque has been in the field of motorsports for more than 100 years.

As early as the 1930s, the company was already competing using the Auto Union Type C. It also had its fair share of successes in the World Rally Championship, touring car racing, and endurance racing.

In 2012, Audi etched its first victory with a hybrid-powered race car at the Le Mans 24 Hours — marking the beginning of electrification in motorsport at Audi.
