Lexus unveils TZ 3-row EV SUV

MANILA: Lexus has debuted the all-new TZ - the Japanese luxury carmaker’s first-ever all-electric three-row model.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the range of the all-new Lexus TZ?

The all-new Lexus TZ has a WLTP-estimated range of 530 kilometers.
  • What category of vehicle is the all-new Lexus TZ?

The Lexus TZ is a mid-size, all-electric, three-row sport utility vehicle.
  • Per the Japanese marque, the TZ is a highly versatile vehicle designed for those who want more out of a daily-driving-capable ride. In fact, it comes with the theme “Discover Limitless,” which represents the idea of going beyond the humdrum of everyday routines into something new and adventurous.

So, in a nutshell, Lexus opted to make the TZ offer a blend of comfort, performance, and style. With that said, what is the Lexus TZ really offering?

    Powertrain

For its powertrain, the all-new Lexus TZ comes with front and rear electric motors. These form an all-wheel-drive system called the Lexus Direct4. When it comes to outputs, the vehicle’s front motor can produce up to 223 horsepower (hp) and 268.6 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. Its rear motor also has the same amount of churn, which is unusual since most carmakers often roll out rear-wheel-biased AWD electric vehicles (EV).

Paired with the Lexus TZ’s dual motor setup is a 95.82 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, which provides the ride with a range of 530 kilometers, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

Like any EV model in the market, the all-new three-row Lexus nameplate comes with regenerative braking. It also has several fast direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) port types, depending on the market.

When using fast-charging, Lexus claims that the TZ can increase its battery levels from 10-80 percent in just 35 minutes.

With those mechanical bits, the Lexus TZ is said to be capable of accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 5.4 seconds. It also has a towing capacity of up to 1,500 kilograms.

    Exterior

Appearance-wise, the Lexus TZ mixes elegance and functionality, sprinkled with some degree of “road presence” - an element that most sport utility vehicles (SUV) are known for.

Key to the model's look is the Lexus “Unified Spindle” design, which gives the car a seamless appearance by cleanly integrating the front fascia with the rest of the body. This is evident from the fact that all sections of the EV (save for its window pillars and lower side sections) are the same color as its boxy body.

Further enhancing its appearance is an upright stance, graced with angular character lines, especially on its front fascia and doors. These go together with sharp LED headlamp clusters and a pair of slim LED taillights.

Concerning functionality, the design of the TZ’s body was crafted with aerodynamics in mind. In fact, the Japanese luxury carmaker says that it has a drag coefficient of 0.27, same as the Toyota GR 86

Regardless, the Lexus TZ is definitely a hefty vehicle, as shown by its dimensions as detailed below:

    Length (in millimeters)

    5,100

    Width (in mm)

    1,990

    Height (in mm)

    1,705

    Wheelbase length (in mm)

    3,050

    Other amenities

As of this publication, Lexus has yet to publish a full list of features for the all-new TZ. For that matter, all specs mentioned above are from the model’s prototype as well.

Be that as it may, the TZ’s cockpit does appear to be minimalistic in nature, while retaining a good amount of physical buttons. Per Lexus, the car’s insides also boast recycled and sustainable materials, particularly bamboo and aluminum.

Some key interior features of the TZ, as mentioned by Lexus, include an ambient lighting system, power-adjustable lounge-like seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

Moreover, the model is touted to have excellent noise cancellation as it follows the car brand’s Aji-migaki refinement program. In this case, the said program prioritized “quietness - both at rest and in motion.”

On the one hand, the vehicle also promises “the joy of driving” via an Interactive Drive Mode, which we assume can bring out the full power and capabilities of the vehicle’s dual-motor setup and suspension systems.

For now, Lexus has not shared any pricing details for the TZ. However, it has confirmed that it will be released via a phased global launch initiated by the luxury marque throughout 2026. Hopefully, this will include the Philippine market.
