LTO eyes launch of digital driver’s license soon

MANILA: A digital driver's license will soon be provided by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) as an alternative to the physical card.

Driver's licenses can soon be accessed digitally via a “super app” developed by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), according to LTO Chief Jay Art Tugade.

Tugade said that the digital license may be presented by motorists to law enforcement officers when apprehended, however, he did specify when the digital version will be available.

The digital driver's license will serve as another alternative aside from the official receipt as a temporary driver's license since the LTO is experiencing a shortage of materials used for physical license cards.

Tugade added that the “super app” can also be used for other transactions with LTO, such as license registration, renewal, and online payments. The app will also function as a digital wallet, allowing users to store government IDs, among other things, within their mobile devices.

Tugade also guaranteed that the digital version of a driver's license will have the same security measures as the physical form.

He added that streamlining and digitizing more services will help the agency eradicate corruption.

In March, the LTO and the DICT formed an e-governance partnership to improve systems and procedures in government agencies through digitalization.
