LTO to use MMDA cameras vs traffic violators

MANILA: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will take advantage of the existing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in recording violations of motorists in the National Capital Region.

According to LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, the recorded videos will be used in issuing show cause orders (SCO) against any erring motorists as part of the road safety measures that are in line with the instruction of Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista.

“The cameras installed by the MMDA are being used to monitor traffic situations especially in major thoroughfares in Metro Manila. We might as well use them in order to run after erring motorists who would openly defy traffic safety rules,” Mendoza was quoted as saying.

Earlier, a meeting between LTO officials and MMDA officials, particularly Director III for Enforcement Atty. Victor Maria Nuñez and Head of Metrobase NCAP and Overspeeding Group Ronezes Rivera last April 2.

Mendoza said that during the meeting, the MMDA has agreed to the proposal of the LTO. “Initially, we will be focusing on the violators of the EDSA Busway,” Mendoza shared.

Under the agreement, MMDA will share the captured videos of violations, including details on the date and the time of the violation, and the license plate of the vehicle involved in any traffic violation.

“These captured videos that will be transmitted to our office will be used as the basis of SCO that would be issued to erring motorists,” Mendoza noted.

Mendoza has expressed gratitude to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes for continuous cooperation and coordination to instill discipline among motorists in Metro Manila.
