Nissan recalls X-Trail e-POWER in Australia over battery controller issues, are PH models affected?

MANILA: Nissan Motor Company Proprietary Limited—the Japanese carmaker’s arm in the Land Down Under—has recalled the X-Trail e-POWER in Australia.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why is the Nissan X-Trail e-POWER being recalled in Australia?

The recall stems from a software glitch within the Lithium-ion Battery Controller (LBC). This issue may trigger a fail-safe mode while driving or during regenerative braking, potentially resulting in a loss of motive power and preventing the battery from charging.
  • Are Nissan X-Trail e-POWER models in the Philippines affected by this recall?

Nissan Philippines has not issued an official announcement regarding local units.
  • Per the notice issued by Australia’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport, and the Arts; the Nissan T33 X-Trail e-POWER has been recalled due to a software issue with the Lithium-ion Battery Controller (LBC).

As such, “the vehicle may enter a fail-safe mode while driving or when the driver is using regenerative braking,” which could lead to “a loss of motive power and prevent the vehicle from charging.”

The agency also pointed out that the hazards are serious, noting that “a loss of motive power may increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

    Are PH models affected?

Nissan Motor Philippines Incorporated has yet to announce whether or not the newly-launched X-Trail e-POWER for the local market is affected by the same issues the Australian models are experiencing.

The affected year range in Australia is from 2022 to 2026 and covers a total of 13,794 units.

Australian owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to contact their local authorized Nissan dealer to have the software reprogrammed, free of charge.

Nissan X-Trail e-POWER powertrain specs in PH

In the Philippines, the T33 Nissan X-Trail is sold only in a single variant with the company’s e-POWER technology.

Propulsion comes from a single electric motor and a single-speed electric drive transmission, powered by a 1.85-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that is actively charged by a 1.5-liter inline-three gasoline engine as the vehicle is driven.

The setup makes 204 horsepower and 330 Newton-meters of torque. Range-wise, it does approximately 1,000 kilometers.

Nissan’s Philippine wing notes that the use of its e-POWER technology endows the X-Trail with instant torque, powerful acceleration, and a smooth, quiet ride. That’s because the internal combustion engine acts only as a generator to power the electric motor, providing would-be owners with the advantages of electric vehicle driving, sans the range anxiety, since one can simply refuel the “generator” at any given time.

At the time of writing, the Nissan X-Trail e-POWER for the Philippine market sells for P2.29 million.
