NLEX proactively prepares for rainy season

MANILA: NLEX Corporation has rolled out initiatives to ensure motorists are safe during adverse weather conditions especially this rainy season.

The tollway operator said that part of these measures is the proactive clearing of drainage systems throughout the dry season and the preparation of pumps and detection tanks in Balintawak, Quezon City and Paso de Blas, Valenzuela.

Aside from that, the firm also extended cleaning efforts beyond the expressway by having similar initiatives in the key rivers and creeks in Valenzuela, Caloocan, and Manila—recognizing the interdependence of waterways and their collective impact on flood risks.

From January to May this year, NLEX teams removed silt and garbage in the heavily clogged waterways within densely populated areas.

“Having cleaned critical and flood prone waterways in surrounding areas affecting the expressway, we believe that stormwater can now flow more freely and help reduce the risk of overflows that sometimes reach the expressway,” NLEX President and General Manager Luis Reñon was quoted as saying.

“We deeply appreciate the partnership with the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways), TRB (Toll Regulatory Board), MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority), and the LGUs (local government units) in these clean-up operations, and we join them in encouraging residents to help keep waterways free from trash,” he added.

Further, the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation subsidiary also placed portable flood barriers and other critical emergency equipment as well as rescue boats, and other essential emergency response assets on low-lying sections of the expressway.

Additional early-warning cameras were also installed at critical creeks crossing the expressway that will allow real-time monitoring of water levels.

NLEX Corporation also mobilized maintenance teams to conduct repairs across the NLEX and SCTEX network—including an asphalt overlay project between Ciudad de Victoria and Bocaue.

The firm also mentioned that it is also enhancing roadside shoulder drainage and conducting tree-trimming activities to reduce the risk of falling branches during strong winds.

Lastly, NLEX Corporation shared that it is also keeping close coordination with national government agencies and local authorities to ensure a swift, synchronized response to severe weather disruptions.

“Emergency and traffic operations teams will remain fully deployed throughout the rainy season to maintain uninterrupted traffic management and public safety services,” the company added.
