Toyota Prius 2016, Know it Technically Now

MANILA: Exteriorly revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, the Toyota Prius 2016 is now finally technically disclosed by its makers. It measures 4540 mm long, 1760 mm wide, and 1470 mm tall which means that it is now 60 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 20 mm lower than the outgoing model. However, the wheelbase of 2700 mm has been retained.

The New Global Architecture modular platform on which it sits and the new headlamps and redesigned bumpers are not new to us but the section of powertrain will definitely widens the size of your eyes. It houses a 1.8-litre VVT-i inline-four engine which is nearly on par with the brand's GD diesel series engines. With installed dual cooling system, this engine now has 40% thermal efficiency. It also has low viscosity oil which reduces friction between moving parts. The new piston and air intake port designs will generate better tumble swirl inside the cylinder whereas the increased exhaust gas recirculation volume will make better combustion performance.

Talking about the numbers, the engine will deliver 99 PS of power and 142 Nm of torque. The 73 PS electric motor and trans-axle have been redesigned too. Moreover, with new-designed multi-axle the mechanical power loss is also reduced by 20%. Seated beneath the rear seat, the Prius 2016 also gets a new nickel-metal hybrid battery which is optimized for urban driving.

The 502-litre of boot space, 4.2-inch digital instrument, color head-up display, and new air conditioning system are some interior attractions but the mechanical attraction is the 18 % increase in fuel efficiency with all the above mentioned lightweight new components.
