Unioil strengthens commitment to sustainability

MANILA: Unioil has presented its long-term initiatives to reduce the company’s impact on the environment.

Unioil is the first independent petroleum company that operated a network of service stations in the Philippines. It is also known to be the pioneer in bringing European-standard fuels in the country, including its current Euro-5 fuels in the Philippines. These fuels contain only 10 ppm of sulfur, which is five times less than the Euro 4 products.

In 2017, Unioil launched the “Doing Our Part” campaign to promote sustainable practices. As part of the effort, Unioil has implemented several ways to reduce the carbon footprint of its business operations. The company opened solar-powered “hybrid” service stations, the first of which is located along Congressional Avenue Extension in Quezon City. The station uses solar panels from Smartflower, the global leader in intelligent solar energy. Each unit lowers the company’s carbon footprint by 4.7 metric tons annually.

The first-ever electric vehicle (EV) charging station is also located in the same Unioil branch. To expand its EV charging service, Unioil opened another charging station at its Guadalupe EDSA Makati branch. Both stations come with three charging protocols, which are compatible with most Japanese, European, and American EVs.

Last year, the Unioil Mobile App was launched to provide a cashless and contactless payment option to the customers, which is helpful during the pandemic. The mobile app can be used by new and existing Unioil Loyalty cardholders.

Unioil is also known for being an advocate of clean air and sustainability. The company has been managing air-monitoring stations in key cities in the Philippines since 2016. In 2017, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environment Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) acknowledged the air monitoring efforts of Unioil. The data gathered from Unioil’s air monitoring stations are being used to support the air quality monitoring components of the Philippine Clean Air Act.

Unioil was also a recipient of the “Clean Air Champion” award from the Clean Air Philippines Movement, Inc. (CAPMI). This recognition is given to individuals and institutions who initiated programs that help lessen pollution and promote clean air.
