Volkswagen presents ID. Cross Concept at IAA Mobility

MANILA: Volkswagen has presented the ID. Cross electric concept crossover at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) Mobility in Munich, Germany. 

At a glance, the said prototype looks modern without being overly futuristic. On that note, the Wolfsburg-based carmaker pointed out that one of the electric crossover’s more appealing aspects is its new, clear, and likable design language. 

“We call our new design language ‘Pure Positive.’ It is based on our three design cornerstones of stability, likeability, and secret sauce; it will characterize every new Volkswagen in the future. We rely on a pure and powerful clarity, along with visual stability and a positive, likable vehicle personality. The lines and powerful surfaces on the ID. Cross Concept are pure and clear. They shape an SUV (sport utility vehicle) that is a trend setter, not a trend follower, and one that transfers the brand’s identity into the future,” Volkswagen Head of Design Andreas Mindt was quoted saying. 

“A Volkswagen must be likeable, unmistakable, and inspire with its character. That’s why we deliberately evoke Volkswagen icons such as the Golf and the VW bus in the ID. Cross Concept — on top, as a dash of ‘secret sauce.’ This can be seen, for example, in the charismatic C-pillars and the completely straight window line. Few volume brands in the world can draw on such a strong heritage. And that will always be in our toolkit on our journey into the future,” he added.

Dimensions, exterior features

According to Volkswagen, the concept vehicle has a similar size to that of the T-Cross, a nameplate that is available to Filipino car buyers. 

It rides on a set of 21-inch alloy wheels shod in 235/40 tires. 

Homey interior 

Inside the Volkswagen ID. Cross are plenty of fabric-covered surfaces, which was intentionally selected to provide the vehicle with a “homey atmosphere.” 

On that note, the cabin also sports unique appointments such as plant motifs on the screens as well as real plants on the center console to enhance the interior’s feel-good effect. 

Another highlight — Volkswagen noted — is the seats, which can fold down completely to create a reclining area in the style of a VW Bus.

Electric powertrain 

Propelling the Volkswagen ID. Cross Concept is a newly-developed state-of-the-art drive system, which uses an electric drive motor with two central modules integrated in the front axle. 

Giving it juice is a high-voltage battery arranged flat in the sandwich floor. 

According to Volkswagen, the electric motor can put out as much as 208 horsepower. 

In addition, the Volkswagen ID. Cross concept car uses the MEB modular electric drive matrix, which the automaker said will be continuously developed in the future to the MEB+. 

“The MEB is getting a new software generation from next year, which brings with it a noticeable functional enhancement of many systems for our customers. This further development of the Volkswagen-typical modular system brings functions to vehicles from higher vehicle segments, such as the further developed Travel Assist,” Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development Kai Grünitz noted. 

“The MEB+ is thus the technical key to being able to offer electric vehicles such as the production version of the ID. Cross Concept and the new ID. Polo with above-average product characteristics at attractive prices,” he stated. 

World premiere

The Volkswagen ID. Cross will make its world premiere sometime in 2026.
