Geely poised to launch Monjaro EM-i in PH?

MANILA: Geely Motor Philippines appears to be poised to launch the Monjaro EM-i in the country, which will expand its electrified offerings locally. 

Such speculation was brought by the nameplate’s inclusion in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) list of approved electric vehicles (EV). 

The local wing of the Chinese carmaker is yet to make an announcement pertaining to the rollout of the plug-in hybrid midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV), but its appearance in the said list is a likely tell of its inevitable arrival. 

Here are a few notable features potential buyers can expect from the Geely Monjaro EM-i.

Hybrid powertrain 

Upon checking the links provided by the agency, the Philippine-specification Geely Monjaro EM-i will pack a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a permanent magnet synchronous motor and an induction motor. The mill is mated to a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission and is equipped with an electric all-wheel drive system.

Combined, the Geely Monjaro EM-i can put out approximately 410 horses and 723 Nm of pulling power. 

With the above numbers, would-be owners can tailor their drives using its four drive modes (Pure, Hybrid, Power, and Snow) and two terrain modes (Off-road and Sand). 

Range-wise, it relies on its 29.8 kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery to run up to 130 kilometers (km) on electric power alone, or up to 1,095 km with the internal combustion engine in play. 

Overall, the incoming Geely Monjaro EM-i can zoom from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in 5.83 seconds with a top speed of 190 kph. 

Chassis 

Braking and deceleration will be handled by a set of ventilated disc brakes. 

Its suspension system is comprised of MacPherson struts at the fore and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. 

Other features include an optional Continuous Damping Control and a standard Adjustable Regenerative Braking System. 

Exterior 

The fascia of the Geely Monjaro EM-i (based on the photo from DOE’s website) appears to be fitted with a modern iteration of the brand’s Expanding Cosmos grille with the new Geely badge slapped at the center. 

Further, the spec sheet notes that it has LED illumination, a panoramic sunroof with a retractable sun shade, roof rails, an acoustic (heat-insulating) windshield, power side mirrors, and a power tailgate. 

It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels shod in R20 Goodyear tires. 

Interior 

The cabin of the Geely Monjaro EM-i looks impressive, at least on paper. 

It is upholstered in a mix of leatherette and faux suede (with perforation on the seats), with the steering wheel swathed in microfiber leather. Past which is a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel with thin-film transistor technology. There is also a 25.6-inch windshield head-up display in addition to its 15.4-inch high-definition central screen. 

Wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available for smartphone connectivity, while audio is sent to a 16-speaker Flyme Sound audio system. There is also a wireless charger and a dual-zone automatic climate control with an N95 air conditioning filter.
