MANILA: Geely Motor has announced plans to introduce car models for the Philippine market based on its Global Electric Architecture (GEA) platform.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Which Geely models in the Philippines use the brand’s Global Electric Architecture (GEA) platform?
Locally available Geely models that use the GEA platform are the EX5 all-electric crossover. What is the Geely GEA?
The Geely GEA is a modular vehicle platform that uses a “central super brain” and is optimized for new energy vehicles. The aforementioned is a huge step for the Chinese car brand in the local market, as the GEA is touted as one of the most crucial components of its next-generation vehicle development strategy.
GEA: moving away from traditional platforms
According to Geely, the most significant characteristic of the GEA platform is its cutting-edge design that moves away from traditional vehicle architectures.
For starters, GEA is optimized for electrified vehicles, but it was built from the ground up, relying entirely on a centralized control unit.
Specifically, 14 traditional automotive control modules were integrated into just two components. The aforementioned, of course, simplifies the manufacturing process of a given vehicle and makes it highly modular. The said quality may then result in lower manufacturing costs.

As mentioned, Geely models that are based on GEA are optimized to use electric motors in combination with an internal combustion range extender. Geely shared that these range extenders can achieve a thermal efficiency of up to 46.5 percent, resulting in utmost fuel-efficiency.
With its modularity, the GEA can also accommodate various setups. All of these, however, are said to depend on an 11-in-one electric drive unit that combines the motor, electric control components, and the transmission into a single, lightweight, compact housing.

Plus, they are touted as safer than traditional vehicles due to their cell-to-body setup, in which the electric vehicle (EV) battery is built directly into the chassis, providing greater torsional rigidity and crash safety.
