3 biggest reasons to buy the Geely EX2

Geely Motor Philippines has recently expanded its lineup of electric vehicles (EV) with the local entry of the EX2 - a subcompact hatch that’s markedly smaller than the EX5 EV crossover. 

Sure, the model is tiny, but the segment of EVs in the Philippines has been growing lately, indicating demand for this size of ride. 

But does the Geely EX2 have specific qualities that will make one pick it over the multitude of other subcompact all-electric nameplates in the country right now? Let’s find out here. 

Small car energy is perfect for the city

This isn’t exclusive to the Geely EX2 per se, but its subcompact size makes it the perfect daily driver in places like Metro Manila, Cebu City, and Davao City. It is easy to park, easy to maneuver on tight two-lane roads, and it will fit swimmingly well in the chaotic, often claustrophobic bumper-to-bumper traffic of the places mentioned above. 

Additionally, it may also fit the bill as a great beginner driver’s car due to its non-intimidating size.

Generous range

On paper, the Geely EX2 can cover up to 398 kilometers (km) from a single full charge, according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). With that said, this Geely-made hatch sits high on the range totem pole, especially when compared to other EV models of its size. 

This is coupled with its fast-charging direct current (DC) port, which can charge the battery from 30-80 percent in just 25 minutes. This means less waiting for the car to get full, and more time on the road. 

It is likewise interesting to note that the car uses a multi-link rear suspension system - a rarity amongst small hatchbacks, which commonly come with torsion beams for their rear ends. By their very nature, multi-link suspension systems offer greater adjustability, allowing Geely’s engineers to provide the EX2 with optimal ride comfort and traction. 

In terms of power, meanwhile, the Geely EX2 can produce up to 113 horsepower (hp) and 150 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. It isn’t the peppiest in its class, but do remember that, for an EV, its 1,300-kilogram (kg) curb weight makes it relatively light. 

By comparison, the similarly sized BYD Dolphin has a curb weight of 1,405 kg. The Dongfeng Nammi is a bit heavier still at 1,430 kg, while the GAC Aion UT tips the scales at around 1,500 kg. 

Lots of comfort, safety features

While offered at relatively affordable prices, the Geely EX2, especially the top-spec Max variant, comes with a smorgasbord of in-cabin amenities. 

For one thing, the car’s dash was equipped with a huge 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This goes together with an 8.8-inch digital guage cluster. 

Moreover, the car’s main display is paired with a six-piece speaker set, at least for the top-spec Max. Topping up devices inside the vehicle is done via a wireless smartphone charging pad and USB ports. 

Other comfort-oriented amenities available to the Geely EX2 include automatic air-conditioning, vegan leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and a lot of storage cubby holes. Also, the car’s trunk can fit up to 1,320 liters of stuff with the rear seats folded down. This is more than enough for lugging around sports equipment or several travel bags. If that wasn’t enough, the car also has a 70-liter front trunk - the largest in its class. 

Apart from creature comforts, the Geely EX2 doesn’t scrimp on safety gear. On the passive side, the model has anti-lock braking, traction control, hill-start assist, stability control, hill-start assist, hill-hold control, a total of six airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and rear parking radars. 

Its array of advanced driver assist systems, meanwhile, includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, intelligent high beams, and a 360-degree view camera. 

Final thoughts

To sum it all up, there’s clearly plenty to like about the Geely EX2. It is well-kitted out in terms of safety and comfort, plus, its decent range and size mean that it has the potential to become a good daily driver for city slickers. 

For the unaware, the Geely EX2 retails at P938,000 for the Pro and P1.038 million for the top-spec Max. Those prices mean that it is relatively affordable.
