Here are 3 reasons why you should consider the Jaecoo J8

MANILA: It’s no secret that Filipino car buyers are more open to switching to electrified mobility and take chances with different Chinese car brands that offer appealing packages at tempting prices.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the driving range of the incoming Jaecoo J8 on a full tank and a full charge?

According to data from the Department of Energy’s list of approved new-energy vehicles, the plug-in hybrid Jaecoo J8 is expected to offer a combined range of 1,300 to 1,350 kilometers.
  • Can the Jaecoo J8 handle off-road driving?

It is possible that the vehicle can handle light off-roading as it available with an an all-wheel-drive drivetrain, comes with a 181 mm ground clearance, and a 600 mm water wading capacity.
  • This shift was apparent at the previously held auto expos, which are the 10th edition of the Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) and the 21st Manila International Motor Show

On that note, many willing adopters have noticed a sport utility vehicle (SUV) tucked in the corner of Jaecoo’s booth — the yet-to-be-launched J8. For those holding off pulling the trigger on currently available hybrid models, here are three reasons to wait for the launch of the said model before they splash the cash.

    Decent range

It is true that the Jaecoo J8 is yet to be released by the twin brand of Omoda, hence actual numbers for the Philippine market are yet to be announced by Jaecoo Philippines.

However, the model has already been listed under the Department of Energy’s list of approved new-energy vehicles, allowing us to peek at some of the figures we can expect from the plugin hybrid SUV.

According to the data linked on the website, the Jaecoo J8 has a combined range of 1,300 to 1,350 kilometers — that means traveling with a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas.

Sure, those are not exactly record-breaking numbers, but compared to hybrids that came out just a few years ago, the said range could give more motorists the freedom to travel longer (in between fuel stops or charging the 19.43- (Gotion NMC) or 34.46-kilowatt-hour (CATL NMC) battery.

    Capable daily driver

Powering the Jaecoo J8 is a familiar formula used by most Chinese car brands, a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and some electric motors — specifically two and three, depending on the variant.

According to Jaecoo, the setup for its three-trim nameplate roster are as follows:

    Model

    Luxury

    Executive

    Flagship

    Number of electric motors

    2

    3

    Combined power (in horsepower)

    225

    226

    Combined torque (in Newton-meters)

    450

    580

    Can go ‘almost’ anywhere

It is still not certain whether or not Jaecoo Philippines will market the J8 as an SUV that can brave the unpaved path, but according to the information in the company’s literature, it appears that the automobile might be able to cater to light off-roading and light overlanding escapades.

First is its drivetrain configuration, which on the Executive and Flagship variants is all-wheel drive. Next, a 20-degree approach and departure angle has been listed, along with a water wading capacity of 600 millimeters (mm) and a ground clearance of 181 mm.

The Jaecoo J8 will ride on 20-inch tires, but the 245/50 size does not reveal whether or not these are highway tires or all-terrain ones.

    Final thoughts

There are no specific dates yet as to when the Jaecoo J8 will make its official Philippine premiere. However, since it has already been previewed at PIMS 2026, there is a chance that its arrival could happen within the year.
