Expected to be introduced soon, the anticipated lineup will be led by the first fully electric iX5, followed by the BMW iX5 Hydrogen in 2028.

Other variations include gasoline- and diesel-fed trims with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, and plug‑in hybrid versions.

    Fully-electric BMW iX5 world premiere

Based on the sixth-generation of BMW eDrive technology, the BMW iX5 will come with a new high-voltage battery concept with cylindrical cells and 800V technology.

The vehicle will be powered by two electric motors in an all-wheel-drive configuration. Energy comes from its high-voltage battery (the largest energy bank to be fitted in an all-electric BMW model to date) that can store approximately 141-144 kilowatt-hours of energy.

    BMW iX5 Hydrogen

Meanwhile, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen—which will serve as the marque’s first-ever hydrogen-powered offering—will undergo series production around two years from now.

The powertrain is made up of the new BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system fuel cell system, and a high-voltage battery.

Per BMW, the flat tank system has seven high-pressure tanks made of carbon-fiber reinforced composite materials, connected to one another in parallel. The company said that the layout efficiently utilizes the space intended for it. Aside from that, models with fuel cell technology can be built on the same production line as other drive system types.

    Heart of Joy features

Further, the BMW X5 will provide a new driving experience courtesy of technology from the Neue Klasse – the Heart of Joy, featuring the BMW Dynamic Performance Control driving stack developed fully in-house.

This unit makes adjustments to the powertrain, brakes, steering sub-functions, charging, and recuperation up to 10 times faster.

“In the BMW iX5 and BMW iX5 Hydrogen, this technology also impresses with extremely smooth stopping maneuvers while also increasing efficiency by recovering more energy under deceleration with regenerative braking. In combustion-engined or plug-in hybrid models, the latest digital and highly interconnected driving dynamics systems ensure the car always makes optimum use of the available traction and delivers composed handling at all times. These systems include the standard-fitted tenth-generation transverse dynamics management system and near-actuator wheel slip limitation, both supported by precisely tuned chassis components,” BMW explained.

The soon-to-be-released BMW X5 will be fitted with an electronically-controlled adaptive suspension system as standard and an optional Adaptive Chassis Control Professional (to be available only for the full‑electric BMW iX5 and the plug-in hybrid models).
