The BMW Z4 has carved a niche for itself all these years for the exclusivity it offers – a usable, practical convertible car for a daily usage basis. The sports-car received its latest makeover only a couple of years ago, which has made it a tech-fest on wheels, in addition to the design advancements it has brought to the table. There are three different variants of BMW Z4 on offer in the Philippines, namely 20i, 30i, and M40i.
On the inside too, the BMW Z4 looks quite different from the rest of the siblings under BMW, if not drastically. All the major design revisions which we have witnessed in recent generation BMWs, like a full TFT instrument console, a hexagonal housing for the wide touchscreen infotainment system which is in unison with the instrument console and the minimalist but wide panel for the automatic climate control buttons are all here as well.
This two-seater sports car has got special sports seats too to inculcate that special sporty feel. With all the premium features at a place which one can expect from a BMW, the Z4 feels very up to date.
The BMW Z4 has always represented itself as a stylish attention magnet, and this latest iteration also continues to turn one’s head with its low and wide stance, coupled with the additional desirability of an open-top sports car.
The front fascia of the BMW Z4 looks distinctively different from the rest of the cars in BMW’s lineup, primarily due to two main aspects. First is the design of the dual kidney grille, with the dual kidneys having a hexagonal design and unique diamond-studded pattern within them, in addition to the traditional vertical slats. And second is the sweptback design for the main headlamps, which get characteristic LED illumination within them.
The side profile of the BMW Z4 has always been the talking point of the car, which has been mildly tweaked for this iteration. The low slung stance of the Z4 now comes with a set of inclined character lines flowing sideways one over the above. There is a vertically laid but slightly curved air vent ahead of the doors, which along with the wide door theme and openable roof, adds to the sporty appeal of the car.
The BMW Z4 also loos much more gorgeous and wider when viewed from the rear, as the boot lid design has been heavily revised to incorporate sleeker and horizontally laid LED tail lamps. The boot lid has a high loading lip, which along with the bigger rear bumper, gives it a squatted stance.
Staying true to the BMW ethos of supreme driving dynamics, the BMW Z4 gets bestowed with a great character when you drive it behind the steering wheel. The adaptive M suspension can be fully enjoyed by altering the settings via the Driving Experience Control, which can vary from a comfortable urban setup to a full-blown track-oriented mood.
The BMW Z4 is available with a host of powertrain combinations to choose from. The sDrive 20i gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which is coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox and puts up 200 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque. The same engine is there is the sDrive 30i variant as well, but here it is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and produces 260 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. The range-topping M40i variant gets a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and belts out 340 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque.
One can rightly expect the BMW Z4 to be generously equipped with top-notch safety features, and it does get plenty of them. The front, side, and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic differential lock, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, hill descent control, blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection system and many more make it a safe place on wheels to be in.
The BMW Z4 is in a league of its own, by offering the luxury and exclusivity of a convertible two-seater sports car in a package that is much more liveable and practical when it comes to the usage on a daily basis.
The BMW Z4 now has a sharper look than its earlier version. A more traditional folding soft-top covers the car now. The Z4 is undeniably engaging to drive. The acceleration is quick and the power delivery has no lag. There are several drive modes among which Sport is the best. Cruising with the Sport mode emits a smooth grunt which
After a long wait, I finally got the BMW Z4 for myself and I have been on cloud nine ever since. I took a lot of efforts and time for me to save enough money for the Z4 as it has a very hefty price tag. BMW Z4 excels in all the fields, be it speed, performance, style or comfort.
