Volvo launches long range PHEV versions of XC60, XC90

MANILA: Volvo has officially launched the latest versions of the XC90 and XC60 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) crossovers. These two are touted to offer extended combined and all-electric ranges while offering upgraded levels of interior comfort and safety compared to their older counterparts. 

“The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,”  President & CEO at Volvo Cars Håkan Samuelsson said. 

“Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer,” Sameulsson added. 

Notably, the Volvo XC90 and XC60 join its older mild-hybrid and shorter-range PHEV counterparts, as well as the full hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) versions.

Vehicle specifications

For propulsion, both the XC90 and the XC 90 PHEV models use a 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine paired with an electric motor and a battery. These provide an output of 455 horsepower and 709.09 Newton-meters of torque. Both get an all-wheel-drive system connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. 

With that kind of output, Volvo claims the XC60 can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers (km) per hour in just 4.5 seconds. The slightly heavier XC90 is slightly slower with a zero to 100 km time of 5 seconds. 

Concerning all-electric range, the XC60 can cover up to 200 km from a single full charge. The XC90, on the other hand, has an electric-only range of 160 km. With regard to extended ranges, the XC60 PHEV can cover up to 1,230 km, while the XC90 can cover up to 1,100 km. 

Suspension components for the two all-new models consist of a double wishbone front end and an integral axle with leaf springs for the rear. Depending on the market, Volvo can provide an optional air suspension system for the two nameplates. 

Stopping power for the XC60 and XC90 is handled by front and rear discs, with a claimed 100-0 kph stopping distance of 35 meters. 

Design-wise, the Volvo XC60 in particular received new details. This includes a revamped front bumper, hood, and grille. Over towards the sides, it now sports more prominent-looking wheel arches and a sleeker rear bumper. Overall, the redesigned XC60 looks more modern.

The interior of the XC60 and XC90 PHEV doesn’t deviate much from their older mild-hybrid and HEV counterparts. And yes, the XC60 is still a five-seater, while the XC90 can still seat up to seven. 

Some improvements, however, include the new optional Cardamom brown leather upholstered seats and Brown Ash wood inlays. The said vehicles were likewise kitted out with an 11.2-inch central infotainment system that now comes with Google Gemini artificial intelligence. An optional Bowers and Wilkins sound system is also available. 

Safety-wise, the vehicles received an upgraded 360-degree view camera with better detection capabilities for cyclists. The aforementioned goes together with radars, cameras, and other sensors. 

Added safety is provided by advanced driver-assist systems such as lane change assist, autonomous emergency braking, and autonomous emergency steering - among others. 

As of this writing, Volvo has not released the prices for the XC60 and XC90 PHEV. It was disclosed, however, that the XC60 PHEV will become available at Volvo dealerships in Europe and the United States in early 2027. The XC90 PHEV, meanwhile, will follow “soon.” 

Volvo Philippines, for now, has not indicated if these two will also enter the Philippine market, but here’s to hoping.
