Recent Updates of KIA Soul

At the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Korean automaker unveiled the all-new 2020 Kia Soul. The car looked amazing with its quirky styling on its iconic boxy shape. Once launched, the new Soul will be available in six trims all featuring aggressive engines and never seen before styling.

Powering the all-new 2020 Soul crossover is either a base 2.0-litre naturally aspirated mill producing 147 PS of power and 179 Nm of torque, or a turbo 1.6-litre unit churning out 201 PS and 264 Nm of torque. A six-speed manual or a CVT is said to feature in the base model. The turbocharged mill, on the other hand, can be paired with a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. A pure electric version of the Kia crossover, known as the Soul EV, was also unveiled alongside at the show.

There are very few vehicles which create their own niche in terms of the way they look. While they do bring some freshness to the table with their distinctive body style, very few of them succeed in creating a benchmark for others to follow. One such vehicle which falls in the latter category is Kia Soul. A very unique blend of an MPV and SUV, this compact crossover has time and again remained distinctive, thanks to the way it looks and feels in and out, giving it the practicality of an MPV and stance of an SUV. In the Philippines market, the Kia Soul has been made available with a 1.6-litre diesel engine from Hyundai’s U2 family as the only mill option.

Interior & Features

Just like on the outside, the Kia Soul looks equally funky and appealing on the inside as well. Its cabin comes with some very unique standout styling elements making sure that the car looks boring from nowhere.

The overall roundish theme for the cabin is quite evident from the way the steering wheel, instrument console, automatic climate control, and the center console have been designed. The latter two having curvaceous design giving it a much beautiful feeling Italian flair. The rest of the dashboard design has a simple and vertical layout, which aids in giving a high-seating feel to the front passengers.

The Kia Soul is the most spacious compact crossover in its segment, with the best legroom and headroom on offer. Also, the car comes loaded with all the essential features, which makes it a premium car from the inside as well.

As said above, the Kia Soul is a unique blend of an SUV and MPV, which looks quite funky, to be honest. However, its boxy stance with some standout elements might not be to everyone’s taste, with the design being too loud for the mature set of audience.

At the front, the Kia Soul has got a wide trademark stretched-H like grille from Kia, which gets chrome bordering for a premium touch. The swept back headlamps with daytime running LEDs and projector headlamps are in symphony with the rest of the design, and do not look out of place at all. The protruding blackened grille on the front bumper with fog lamps positioned at its lower corners indeed give it the much needed rigid stance of an SUV.

From the sides, the Kia Soul looks boxy, with sharp A-pillar finished in black for a premium appeal, along with the chrome door handles as well as machined alloy wheels. The side cladding, large 18-inch wheels, and high ground clearance give it a profile of an SUV, however, the straightened D-pillar make it feel MUV-ish from the rear side angle.

The rear of the Kia Soul is the most distinctive looking profile of the car. The vertical LED tail lamps, as well as colored rectangular panel within the glass area, give the car a unique appeal. Like at the front, the rear bumper too comes with protruding black panels with fog lamps at lower corners, thus maintaining regularity in the overall design.

Ride & Handling

The Kia Soul’s 18-inch wheels, as well as high ground clearance, give the car the much-needed stance and performance of an SUV while traversing over bad roads with ease. However, the tall height of the car does take a minor toll in its high-speed stability, with a considerable amount of body roll peeping in the cabin at towering speeds. The vehicle is underpinned with a simple suspension setup of MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, which are tuned on a slightly softer side to make it feel very comfortable in the urban peripheries as well as highways.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Kia Soul sources its engine from the U2 family of Hyundai, so in comes a 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine which has been doing its duty in many popular models from Kia as well as Hyundai worldwide. The engine is capable enough of producing a maximum power output of 128 bhp and a peak torque output of 260 Nm.

This engine makes the Kia Soul one of the most powerful diesel cars in this segment. However, the lack of petrol engine option in this very segment is quite surprising as well. Nevertheless, in terms of refinement and power delivery, the Kia Soul’s 1.6-litre oil burner doesn’t disappoint you at any cost and is quite impressive with the way it delivers its power to the wheels. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, which along with organ-type accelerator pedal is a delight to use.

Braking & Safety

Given its price positioning, the Kia Soul might not be too highly equipped in terms of safety gears. However, considering the must-have ones, the Soul doesn’t lack in this department. The Soul covers up with all the basics on board features such as dual, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors with reverse camera, and hill launch assist.

With its one-of-a-kind appeal, the Kia Soul is a very unique looking vehicle whose design might generate a “love it or hate it” kind of impression. However, one thing is clear that you definitely can’t ignore it while you see it in motion or standstill. The Soul successfully manages to collect the positive traits of both an MPV as well as an SUV, by giving it a heightened stance of an SUV along with the interior space, comfort, and practicality of an MPV. The Soul comes only with one engine option, however, the diesel mill it comes with is equally high on performance, refinement, and efficiency. This is one budget crossover which can make you feel different with its body style alone, with ticking the boxes right in all the other mechanical aspects.

    A unique buy

Yes, this car may be slightly funny looking, but its sleek look makes you really want to have this. The detailing is pretty neatly done, and it has gained a spot in the compact car ratings. Apart from that, what really grabbed my attention was the great interiors, the roomy cabin space as well as the outstanding warranty available for Read More
