Here are the JMC Vigus' 2 options in PH

JMC Philippines rolled out two new pickup trucks sometime last year. One of them is the Vigus, a model aimed at the country’s fleet segment, which is filled with nameplates that have proven themselves to be tough workhorses. 

Looking to penetrate the category, the JMC Vigus wants to offer Filipino businessmen and fleet operators a vehicle that can provide them with the mechanical power they need, without breaking the bank. 

On that note, here is a quick look at the two available for the nameplate.

Variant similarities 

The two variants of the JMC Vigus share many similarities.

So, it is only fitting that we talk about what the pickup trucks have alike before we dabble in what differences they have. Here’s a quick rundown: 

Exterior 

The JMC Vigus wears what is essentially a simple and straightforward look — there is no room for any fancy stuff for field pickup trucks after all, so the nameplate sports a no-nonsense exterior packed with just the core features. 

At the fore is a pair of chunky halogen headlamps flanking a blacked-out grille. The upper and lower sections of the latticework share the same horizontal vent design. On its chin is a set of fog lamps for better visibility in dim driving conditions. 

Onto its sides are plain-looking doors with contrast-colored handles. There are no plastic claddings on the wheel arches and the bottom portions of the doors. It would have been better if JMC slapped some hard-wearing material on these surfaces, as these are common touch points and would have saved the pickup truck from the typical dents and scratches on these areas. 

A pair of step boards would have been good too, to help workers with ingress and egress; however, this is where JMC probably has skimped to cut down the cost of the Vigus and make it more appealing to many entrepreneurs. 

It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels slapped with 245/70 series tires. 

The backside of the JMC Vigus is also somewhat plain, like its fascia. Owners can expect to get a pair of tall taillamps, a solid-looking rear bumper, and a relatively robust tailgate. As an added bonus, the vehicle has a sports bar on the bed and harness hooks on the sides. This means operators won’t have to shoulder modifications that might be required for trucks to be used for hauling. 

Interior

Inside, the JMC Vigus gets a plastic steering wheel with multi-functional controls. Past it is an instrument cluster that combines both analog gauges and a small digital screen. The instrumentation panel is easy to understand with legible indicators. 

A little over to the side is a radio with Bluetooth functionality, intended to keep the driver and his or her helper get some form of entertainment while on long drives. Below it are physical controls for the air conditioning system so the driver can operate the air conditioning system by feel and without taking his or her eyes off the road. 

Notable is the dashboard trim of the JMC Vigus, which looks like a traditional “banig” woven mat. 

Powertrain, chassis 

The JMC Vigus uses a 2.5-liter diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox with no option for an automatic transmission. According to the Chinese carmaker, the said setup dishes out the following numbers: 

Maximum power output (in horsepower)	129
Maximum torque (in Newton-meters)	315

Braking power comes from disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the back. 

Supporting the JMC Vigus is a torsion bar spring independent suspension arrangement at the front and a leaf spring non-independent suspension system at the rear. 

Safety 

When it comes to safety, the JMC Vigus has these technologies to offer: 

• Airbags 
• Seatbelts 
• Anti-lock braking 
• Electronic brake-force distribution 

It also has speed-sensing door locks and child lock protection on the doors.

Trim differences 

The major difference between the two trims of the JMC Vigus is its drivetrain unit. Hence, they are called the 4X2 and 4X4 models. 

For obvious reasons, the JMC Vigus 4X2 allows the diesel mill to send power to the front wheels, while the Vigus 4x4 offers improved capabilities as all four wheels deliver power and offer traction. 

On that note, the JMC Vigus 4X2 will be a good pick for lighter duties, while the 4X4 model could be a better option for those whose work requires a tougher machine.
