EV Love: BEVs under Audi, BMW, BYD, Chevrolet

After going over each brand that has recognized plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) nameplates by the Department of Energy (DOE), Zigwheels Philippines’ EV Love series is heading over to check out the brands with DOE-certified battery electric vehicles (BEV).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the DOE-certified BEV models of BMW?

BMW’s roster of BEV models that are certified by the DOE includes the i4, i5, i7, iX, and iX2.
  • What are Audi’s DOE-certified BEV models?

    Audi’s DOE-certified BEV models are the e-Tron GT and the Q6 e-Tron.
  • To kick this off, we’ll be going over Audi, BMW, BYD, and Chevrolet. The aforementioned includes models that are not out yet in the country, but were already included in DOE’s new energy vehicle (NEV) list.

    Audi

In the Philippine market, Audi’s roster of DOE-certified BEV units includes the e-Tron GT and the Q6 e-Tron.

To start, the Audi e-Tron GT is a high-performance, all-electric sedan that’s marketed with the German brand’s famed “RS” badge. This tracks, since the Philippine-spec version can dish out 590 horsepower and 830 Newton-meters of torque.

With the said kind of oomph, the vehicle can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in just 3.3 seconds when “boost mode” is activated. The model can also cover up to 534 kilometers (km) on a single full charge, according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). The aforementioned is thanks to its 83.7 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery.

Additionally, the vehicle is underpinned by an 800-volt charging system that is able to increase its state-of-charge from 5-80 percent in just 22.5 minutes (ideal conditions).

Notably, the Audi e-Tron GT RS gets a sleek, aerodynamic body with a low center of gravity, a sporty interior with heavily bolstered seats, as well as the Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

For people in need of a larger electric vehicle (EV), there’s also the Audi Q6 e-Tron - a five-seater midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV).

At maximum, the Q6 e-Tron can put out 326 hp. It also has a range of up to 640 km, and a fast-charging feature that’s able to increase its battery levels from 10-80 percent in 21 minutes. It isn’t as quick as the e-Tron GT RS, but it also has a zero to 100 kph time of 5.9 seconds.

    BMW

Another brand with DOE-certified BEVs is BMW. Specifically, the i4, i5, i7, iX, and iX2 were included in the government agency’s roster of certified models.

For the unfamiliar, the Bavarian brand’s i-series represents its offerings of all-electric cars. These are based on existing mainline internal combustion models, with examples being the i5 and i7 developed from the 5-series and 7-series sedans, respectively. The iX2, meanwhile, is based on the X2 SUV, whereas the i4 is related to the 4 Series. Only the BMW iX is a dedicated EV platform built from the ground up as a dedicated EV nameplate.

For reference, here are the peak outputs and advertised ranges for the locally available i-Series models that are recognized by DOE:

    BYD

According to DOE’s dedicated website listing certified NEV models, BYD’s locally available BEV nameplates include the Seagull, eMAX 7, and Sealion 7. Obviously, the said list is missing a chunk of nameplates, but this might be for a good reason.

To put it simply, missing DOE entries for cars that we’re sure are EVs could be receiving an update. Also, the list is always getting changes, so there’s no need to be worried.

For the locally available Seagull, it is one of BYD Cars Philippines’ smallest BEVs, so it comes with a modest electric motor that puts out 73 hp and 135 Nm of torque. It also has a range of 300 km, according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

The BYD eMAX 7, on the other hand, is a three-row, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that can seat up to seven occupants. At maximum, its electric motor can produce up to 201 hp and 310 Nm of torque. It also has a NEDC-indicated range of 530 km.

Last on BYD's list is the Sealion 7, which is yet to be launched in the local market. According to the DOE website, this nameplate is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that can produce up to 522 hp. It also has all-wheel-drive.

    Chevrolet

Chevrolet’s DOE-certified models are the Spark EV and the Captiva EV.

The Chevrolet Spark EV is positioned as a small city car with a maximum output of 100 hp. It also has a range of 380 km, according to the brand.

On the other hand, the Chevrolet Captiva EV is an MPV that can put out 201 hp. It also has a range of 415 km.
