EV Love: check out all the HEV offerings from Chery, Ford, Honda

Mostly mass-market nameplates with one high-performance ride coming this year

EV Love: check out all the HEV offerings from Chery, Ford, Honda

In the previous EV Love feature story, we became more acquainted with the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrains of Audi and Bentley - two luxury car brands that produce notably powerful electrified mills.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is Chery’s HEV model as recognized by the DOE?

Chery’s model recognized by the DOE is the Tiggo Cross HEV.
  • What type of vehicle is the upcoming Honda Prelude?

The upcoming Honda Prelude is a two-door coupe.
  • For this edition, however, we’re switching it up to talk about more accessible HEV nameplates from brands such as Chery, Ford, and Honda

So, what are the local arms of these mass market marques offering to prospective hybrid vehicle buyers? Let’s find out here.

    Chery

    Chery Tiggo Cross HEV

Chery Auto Philippines’ (CAP) only HEV model that is recognized by the Department of Energy is the Tiggo Cross HEV

Classed as a subcompact crossover, this nameplate is a five-seater that’s designed to be relatively affordable, while providing a highly efficient powertrain.

Under the hood of the Chery Tiggo Cross HEV is a 1.5-liter, double-overhead-cam (DOHC) Atkinson-cycle inline-four gasoline engine paired with a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and a 1.83-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-iron phosphate battery.

Collectively, this is known as the Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) system, and it also has a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, selectable drive modes (Economy, Sport), and a regenerative braking system.

At maximum, the CSH aboard the Tiggo Cross HEV can generate up to 201 horsepower (hp) and 310 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

Like most of the models on this list, the Chery Tiggo Cross HEV is front-wheel-drive FWD.

    Ford

    Ford Territory Hybrid

Ford Philippines’ premier contender in the local HEV segment is the Territory Hybrid. It was launched back in 2025, and it comes in a compact crossover form factor.

Propelling the Ford Territory Hybrid is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine that is linked to a two-speed DHT. It is also a front-wheel-drive model equipped with a regenerative braking system, as well as selectable drive modes.

On its own, the Ford Territory Hybrid’s internal combustion engine can churn out 148 hp and 230 Nm of torque. Its PMSM and 1.83 kWh lithium-ion nickel-manganese battery combo, however, produces an additional 215 hp and 230 Nm of torque.

    Honda

    Honda Civic RS e:HEV

To kick off Honda Cars Philippines Incorporated’s (HCPI) list of HEVs, let us first talk about the Civic RS e:HEV

To note, the “e:HEV” moniker is the name pertaining to the Japanese carmaker’s proprietary hybrid system. Among the Hondas on this list, the Civic is the oldest nameplate to have received an e:HEV version, as the CR-V has already received a refreshed version this year.

Going back to the Civic, the RS e:HEV stands as the nameplate’s top-of-the-line trim. Under its hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine that goes together with a lithium-ion battery, a PMSM unit, a regenerative braking system, and an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT).

On its lonesome, the Civic RS e:HEV’s four-banger can dish out 102 hp and 182 Nm of torque. Its PMSM adds a further 133 hp and 315 Nm of torque.

    Honda HR-V RS e:HEV

Another Honda nameplate that utilizes the e:HEV system is the HR-V RS. Again, this variant is the top-spec trim of its respective variant lineup.

Contrary to the Civic and CR-V, the HR-V RS e:HEV uses a smaller 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine. It also gets a PMSM unit, a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery, as well as a regenerative braking system.

The top-spec HR-V internal combustion engine can produce 104 hp and 127 Nm of torque. Its electric motor adds more oomph resulting in a total output of 131 hp and 253 Nm of torque.

Note that the HR-V RS e:HEV is the only model without a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) mode that is selectable via a switch. Both the Civic and CR-V RS trims have this feature.

Honda CR-V RS AWD, VX e:HEV

Launched just this year, the updated CR-V now has two e:HEV trims; the top-spec RS and the midspec VX

Like its siblings above, the updated CR-V has regenerative braking and an eCVT. It is the only nameplate, however, that has an all-wheel-drive system, specifically the top-spec RS.

Under the hood of the updated CR-V RS and VX e:HEV is a slightly more powerful 2.0-liter direct injection, Atkinson-cycle engine that’s paired with two PMSM units.

On its own, the model’s gasoline engine can generate up to 145 hp and 183 Nm of torque. Its two PMSM units, on the other hand, adds a further 181 hp and 335 Nm of torque.

    Honda Prelude

HCPI is set to add the Honda Prelude to its lineup this year. For the unaware, the Honda Prelude is a high-performance, two-door model designed to provide driving enjoyment. It is the successor to the long line of Prelude models - the last of which was the fourth-generation BA8, which was discontinued back in 1996.

According to the DOE’s website, the Honda Prelude uses a 2.0-liter engine with a lithium-ion battery, regenerative braking, and an eCVT.

Its gasoline engine on its own can put out 139 hp and 182 Nm of torque. Its electric motor, on the other hand, can provide up to 181 hp and 315 Nm of torque.

Notably, the upcoming Honda Prelude’s e:HEV powertrain seems like a slightly less potent version of the one in the current Honda CR-V. It is, however, a far lighter model with a gross vehicle weight of just 1,850 kilograms (kg). In comparison, the Honda CR-V RS tips the scales at 2,350 kg.

    Final thoughts

Those are the HEV offerings of Chery, Ford, and Honda as recognized by the DOE. As mentioned above, these are mass-market models, except for the upcoming Honda Prelude, which is certain to be marketed as a high-performance offering once it launches this year.
