Homeowners in UK rent out their driveways for EV charging — will it work in PH?

According to YourParkingSpace.co.uk, homeowners in the UK with an electric vehicle (EV) charging point in their driveway are helping eliminate range anxiety by renting out their driveway to EV owners searching for a place to park and charge their car.

In the UK, there are around 30,290 publicly available EV charging points. According to new data from YourParkingSpace.co.uk, there are already 4,892 private spaces available at 1,700 sites for EV owners to park and charge their vehicles.

In a statement, YourParkingSpace.co.uk Chief Executive Officer Harrison Woods said, “Charge anxiety is one of, if not the biggest, barrier to EV adoption in the UK. Offering EV owners a chance to charge and park on a driveway is a creative way to plug this gap and has no doubt already alleviated many drivers’ concerns. Furthermore, the solution is also an attractive option for EV drivers to park their cars in pre-booked driveways as they are conveniently located and often cheaper than traditional car parks.”

The driveway charging point revolution is benefiting more than just EV drivers. Because homeowners can charge a higher tariff, each driveway owner with an EV charge point listed on YourParkingSpace.co.uk makes 14% more money than driveways without a charge point.

In 2021, homeowners who rented out their driveways for EV charging earned up to £500 (P34,000), according to YourParkingSpace.co.uk.

“By renting out their driveway to EV drivers, not only are homeowners helping to combat the issue of charge anxiety, but are also generating a healthy source of additional income which should go some way towards balancing the books during the cost of living crisis,” Woods added.

Homeowners with an empty driveway and an EV charge point can list it for free at www.yourparkingspace.co.uk. Spaces in city and town centers at, near music and sports venues, train stations, airports, and high streets are in particularly high demand.
