The EX5 EM-i is the latest addition to Geely Motor Philippines’ lineup. It is the brand’s first-ever plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) model in the local market; as such, it has caught the attention of those wanting to get into electrified rides. 

Making it even more attractive to would-be buyers is the fact that it is a five-seater crossover - a body type that has been selling like hotcakes in the Philippines for quite some time now.

One of the biggest draws of the all-new Geely EX5 EM-i is its interior. Simply put, it comes with a minimalist interior that didn’t scrimp on creature comforts. 

Sure, its dashboard area doesn’t look busy, but it is dominated by a huge 15.4-inch infotainment display, a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, and a head-up display. The aforementioned central display comes with Apple CarPlay and USB connectivity. It is also linked to a 16-piece Flyme sound system.

Another reason to buy the Geely EX5 EM-i is its powertrain, which consists of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline internal combustion engine paired with an 18.4-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-iron phosphate battery and an electric motor. 

 

On its own, the gasoline engine of the EX5 EM-i can dish out 97 horsepower (hp) and 125 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. These figures go together with the electric motor’s 214 hp and 262 Nm of torque. The model also has a total range of 1,000 kilometers (km), and an all-electric range of 105 km. 

At least on paper, the said figures place the Geely EX5 EM-i high on the totem pole when it comes to maximum output. But apart from being peppy, the model is also touted as very efficient, as demonstrated by its Guinness World Records title: it traveled from Sydney to Melbourne, Australia, with a very low fuel consumption rating of around 26.11 kilometers per liter. 

The said achievement can be attributed to the model’s “11-in-1 E-Drive System,” which is mated to the Geely Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform. Together, these systems enable an intelligent car to achieve high thermal efficiency through intelligent energy management strategies. 

It also helps that the car has a very low drag coefficient of 0.269, according to Geely. This puts it on par with high-performance cars such as the Nissan GT-R R35 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia, both of which have a drag coefficient of 0.26. 

To ensure smooth power engagement, the EX5 EM-i uses a single-speed automatic dedicated hybrid transmission. It also has regenerative braking, alternating current (AC) charging, and a fast direct current (DC) charging capability that can increase its state-of-charge from 30-80 percent in just 20 minutes. 

Plenty of safety gear

People looking for a certifiably safe family ride may also want to lean more towards the Geely EX5 EM-i due to the sheer amount of safety gear it comes with. The aforementioned is highlighted by its five-star rating from both the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) and the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). 

Starting with its passive safety gear, the model has dual front airbags, dual front side airbags, dual side curtain airbags, anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, anti-roll program, ISOFIX, tire pressure monitoring, front/rear parking sensors, a 360-degree view camera, and an electronic anti-theft system - among others.
