Geely sets Guinness World Records title with EX-5

MANILA: Geely Auto secured a Guinness World Records title with Starray (also known as the EX-5 in other markets like the Philippines).

In a statement, the Chinese automaker shared that the nameplate’s plug-in hybrid option namely the Starray EM-i was able to achieve the title “Lowest fuel consumption driving the Sydney–Melbourne Coastal Drive by a plug-in hybrid powered production sport utility vehicle” following the challenge it underwent last December 9-10.

Per Geely Auto, the Geely Starray EM-i Long Range trim completed the 1,056-kilometer challenge with its 3.83-liter-per-100-kilometer reading (L/100 km) or around 26.11 kilometers per liter (kpl). This overtook the New European Driving Cycle data of 4.4 (L/100 km) or 22.72 kpl.

According to Hangzhou-headquartered marque, the achievement highlights its EM-i Super Hybrid Technology as an industry benchmark for energy efficiency and long-range performance.

"The primary purpose of this challenge is to demonstrate the practical user benefits of EM-i Super Hybrid technology," Geely Research Institute Director of the Energy Control Department Dong Wan was quoted as saying.

 "We selected this route to test the vehicle’s performance in everyday user scenarios. The result proves that Geely Auto's EM-i Super Hybrid Engine achieves world-record-level energy efficiency."

Complementing the model’s EM-i Super Hybrid Technology is 1.5-liter internal combustion engine mated to an 11-in-1 E-Drive System and the marque’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform.

Geely noted that the powertrain fusion lets the vehicle switch between pure electric, pure engine, and hybrid modes.

“The EM-i Super Hybrid achieves extreme energy savings through a dedicated high-thermal-efficiency engine, an extremely efficient hybrid electric drive, intelligent energy management strategies, and an ultra-low drag aerodynamic design,” the firm claimed.

To note, the Geely Starray sold a total of 114,185 units since its inception up to last month.

EX-5 in PH

Unlike the record holder, the  the Geely EX-5 for the Philippine market is a full electric offering — propelled by a motor running on a front-wheel-drive format.

This is mated to a 60.22 kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery. This gives the vehicle a fumes-free range of 425 kilometers (based on Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure standards).
