Electric vehicles (EV) are no doubt getting some attention in the Philippine market nowadays. This is especially true given the steady expansion of charging station networks, coupled with the volatility of fossil fuel prices. 

The aforementioned was especially apparent at the recently concluded 2026 Manila International Auto Show, where a whole slew of electrified rides were showcased front and center. 

One of those is the Geely EX2, which isn’t out yet, but promises to be a highly accessible all-electric hatch - a potentially good option for those wanting all-electric mobility for daily commutes within the city. 

But what are the possible rivals of the Geely EX2? Let’s find out here. 

Geely EX2

Before we list the Geely EX2’s potential rivals in the market, let us first check out what it offers prospective buyers. Be aware, however, that the Geely nameplate is not yet available in the Philippines, so the specs and features we’re discussing here come from the Department of Energy (DOE) and its Chinese-market version. Price-wise, though, the model is slated to retail at P999,000. 

Driving the model’s rear wheels is a single permanent synchronous motor (PMSM). At maximum, the said motor can generate up to 113 horsepower (hp) and 150 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. It also has a range of 325 kilometers from a single full charge. 

To optimize the Geely EX2’s powertrain, it also comes with economy, comfort, and sport drive modes. The model also has regenerative braking and a vehicle-to-load feature that allows users to power small gadgets and devices. 

Appearance-wise, the model wears a smooth body shape with minimal character lines and sharp corners. The aforementioned goes together with LED lighting fixtures, power side mirrors, flush door handles, black plastic claddings, and a set of two-tone alloy wheels. 

Inside the Geely EX2 is a five-seater cabin equipped with manual air-conditioning and vegan leather upholstery. These go together with an ambient lighting system, an 8.8-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 14.6-inch Flyme Auto infotainment system. 

Handling smartphone connectivity for the EX2 are Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as several USB ports. 

In China, the Geely EX2 has several advanced driver-assist systems, such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, and a 540-degree view camera. 

Its passive safety gear, meanwhile, includes, but is not limited to, six airbags, anti-lock braking, speed sensing door locks, stability control, and child safety locks - among others. 

BYD Dolphin

One of the key rivals of the upcoming Geely EX2 is the BYD Dolphin, which currently retails at P1.398 million. 

Similar to the others on this list, the BYD Dolphin is a FWD model that uses a single PMSM. At maximum, this can generate up to 93 hp and 180 Nm of torque. It also has a range of 405 km, according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). 

Like many other EVs in the market, the Dolphin comes with regenerative braking, selectable drive modes, and a vehicle-to-load feature. It also has a direct current (DC) fast-charging port that can increase its state of charge from 30-80 percent in just 30 minutes. 

Style-wise, the model gets the typical hatchback shape coupled with some measure of black claddings on its wheel arches and a set of sharp-looking LED light fixtures. Making it more convenient to drive are several exterior amenities, such as automatic headlamp on/off, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, puddle lamps, and rear fog lamps. 

Inside the BYD Dolphin is a five-seater cabin that comes standard with leather seats and automatic climate controls. 

On-board entertainment is handled by a 12.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver, on the other hand, gets access to a 5-inch digital gauge.

Other driving-related amenities available to the BYD Dolphin are:

• Electronic parking brake
• Leather steering wheel
• Tilt and telescopic steering column

For its basic safety kit, the BYD Dolphin was equipped with dual front airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, ISOFIX, anti-lock braking, traction control, hill-start hold, tire pressure monitoring, and an electronic anti-theft system, among many others.

VinFast VF 5

Another similarly sized competitor to the upcoming Geely EX2 is the VinFast VF5. Currently, the said nameplate retails at P949,000 if bought with the brand’s battery subscription. 

The electric motor of the VF 5 can put out 135 hp and 135 Nm of torque. Power is sent to its front wheels, and it also has an NEDC-indicated range of 326 km. Like the others, the model also has selectable drive modes and a regenerative braking system. 

Style-wise, the VinFast VF 5 follows the fleek and aerodynamic convention familiar to other all-electric hatchbacks. Its exterior, meanwhile, comes fitted with halogen headlamps, automatic headlamp on/off function, heated rear glass, and power-adjust side mirrors. 

Inside, the VinFast VF 5 can comfortably accommodate up to five. Everyone inside is kept cool by a manual air-conditioning system and leather upholstery. For on-board entertainment and navigation, the model was equipped with an eight-inch infotainment system with Wifi, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity. 

Other noteworthy interior amenities available to the VinFast nameplate include, but are not limited to:

• Remote starting 
• Push-to-start button
• 60:40 split-folding rear seats

Safety-wise, the VF 5 comes standard with anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, ISOFIX, dual front airbags, side airbags, and curtain airbags - among others. It also has a rear parking assist system and cruise control. 

Dongfeng Nammi

Likewise a potential rival of the upcoming Geely EX2 is the Dongfeng Nammi. Both are similar in size and are all-electric hatchbacks with front-wheel-drive layouts. As of this publishing, the Dongfeng Nammi is priced at P1.238 million. 

At maximum, the Nammi’s single PMSM unit can put out 93 hp and 160 Nm of torque. It also has a regenerative braking system, and a DC charging port that can take its state-of-charge from 30 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. 

Similar to its rivals, the Dongfeng nameplate also comes with a vehicle-to-load system. Its range, meanwhile, spans 430 km, according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. 

For its exterior, the sleek-looking Dongfeng Nammi wears LED lighting fixtures coupled with automatic headlamp function, concealed door handles, and power-adjustable side mirrors. 

It also gets a five-seater interior, fitted with leather seats, automatic climate controls, and ambient lighting. The driver, meanwhile, gets a access to a column-mounted shifter, electronic parking brake, a five-inch digital gauge cluster, and a leather steering wheel. 

For its main display, the Nammi uses a 12-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring and Bluetooth. 

Safety, meanwhile, is provided by dual front airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, hill-start assist, tire-pressure monitoring, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a 360-degree view camera. 

The aforementioned are supported by a number of ADAS features, which include: 

• Automatic emergency braking
• Forward collision warning
• Adaptive cruise control
• Lane departure warning
• Lane keep assist
• Lane centering assist
• Traffic jam assist
• Highway assist
• Intelligent high beam control
• Parking assist

JAC Ytterby

Last but not least is the JAC Yetterby, which, like the Geely EX2, is a subcompact all-electric hatch that rides on a FWD platform. 

According to JAC, the model’s top-spec 505 Lux Pro variant can generate up to 134 hp and 175 Nm of torque. It also has a range of 505 km. 

The Ytterby, like its rivals mentioned above, wears a mostly smooth exterior with minimal sharp corners. For that matter, it even forgoes a grille. Exterior equipment for this ride includes LED lighting, flush door handles, and power-adjustable side mirrors. 

Its interior, meanwhile, comes with a five-seater arrangement with leather upholstery, automatic air conditioning, and an ambient lighting system. 

Dominating the model’s dashboard is a 15.6-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth. The driver is also provided with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 6.5-inch digital gauge, and an electronic parking brake. 

Safety-wise, the JAC Ytterby comes with the following: 

• Airbags
• Seatbelts
• Cruise control
• Electronic stability control
• Dynamic-assisted braking
• Traction control
• Brake assist
• Tire pressure monitoring
• Rear parking sensors
• Energy recovery mode reminder

Depending on the trim, the model also has a 540-degree camera display, and ADAS features such as blind spot detection, cross traffic warning, lane departure warning, front collision warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and intelligent cruise assist - among others. 

Final thoughts

Overall, the upcoming Geely EX2 appears to have all the right stuff to compete with its major rivals in the market. Sure, it is not the most powerful of the bunch, but it more than makes up for it in terms of safety gear, creature comforts, and price.

The pricing for the upcoming Geely model is notable, as the brand has said it will retail below P1 million. That’s something about this ride that the brand can bank on since most of its rivals occupying the same niche currently retail above that threshold.
