Even for car guys, laughter is the best medicine

LOL: 5 vehicles with funny names

This year’s World Laughter Day was celebrated on May 4.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What Subaru car has the front end of a sedan and the rear of a pickup truck?

The Subaru car that combined the body of a sedan and a pickup is the Brat.
  • What Mazda car was named after the flying island in Gulliver;s Travels?

The Mazda car named after an island in a book was the Laputa.
  • According to the World Laughter Day website (which you can check here), the global annual observation aims to “highlight the notable healing benefits of laughter.” In so doing, it looks to bolster the power of positive energy and provide a supportive environment where other like-minded individuals can connect with each other.

On that note, we are going to check out vehicles whose names seem to leave a humorous impression.

    Daihatsu Naked

The Daihatsu Naked is a kei car intended for the Japanese domestic market.

While the name might sound funny, you can see why it was given the moniker due to the bare-like finishing that its exterior has to offer.

From the angle of the photo shown above, one can see the holes where the supposed bolts to hold the exterior panels go. Likewise, the door hinges look like they lack finishing trims. Finally, the steel rims round up the “naked” aesthetics this small car is going for.

As one would expect, the cabin also looks bare with basic amenities for daily drives.

    Toyota Deliboy

It takes a while for one’s brain to wrap around the notion that the name “Deliboy” befits a utility car for light commercial work, such as delivering food or other edible goods.

But at first, the name — which surprisingly made it past the Toyota meeting room — might suggest a frequenter of a delicatessen.

The Toyota Deliboy looks every part a delivery truck or van. The plain white paint with the tasteful pinstripes and “Deliboy” script, screams workhorse vibes. Likewise, the swing-out doors at the back and the steelies wrapped with what seems to be 13-inch tires, complete the last-mile logistics look.

    Subaru Brat

Like a child out of sorts, the Subaru Brat brings rebel vibes that seem to go against the rules of car design — and we’re in for it.

This Subie offers a sedan-looking front end, but ditches the typical rear-end roof for an open pickup truck bed. You only get two seats, but having the ability to carry different types of cargo without the bulky footprint common among trucks nowadays feels liberating.

Now we’re not sure if the Japanese carmaker plans to bring back this type of design, but we would bet there would be gearheads (us included) who wouldn’t be ashamed to be seen in one of these.

And while we’re on the topic of pickup trucks…

    Great Wall Wingle

The Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motor has been known as a top truck maker in its home country, with the Cannon taking half of the Sleeping Giant’s pickup industry, according to its local wing in the Philippines.

Its distant cousin, the Wingle, has garnered the attention of car buyers not only for its capabilities but also for its name, which, as you can imagine, rolls off the tongue.

Aside from its moniker, the features of the vehicle are not laughable. Hence, samples of the nameplate are still being sold in markets where pickups are preferred.

    Mazda Laputa

The Mazda Laputa might easily be the funniest one on the list, granted that we Filipinos would look at it differently, due to our long history with Spain and how our language is intertwined with the Spaniards.

However, it is said that the name references the flying island in Gulliver’s Travels, given its small size.

The Mazda Laputa could find its place in enthusiast circles who are into small, sporty cars.
