BAIC to launch X55 Verve HEV?

MANILA: The local arm of BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation), through its distributor, United Asia Automotive Group Incorporated (UAAGI), could soon roll out the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) version of the X55 Verve. 

Evidence for this comes from the Department of Energy, which has already recognized the BAIC X55 Verve in its list of new energy vehicles (NEV). 

If this model is indeed set to be introduced by BAIC Philippines, the company will have gained a strong leverage in the hybrid crossover segment - a very competitive market in the Philippines right now. 

Note that BAIC does have a slew of locally available new energy rides, ranging from plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), other HEV models, and range extended vehicles (REV). However, most of these are large and tall sport utility vehicles (SUV).

So, what does the DOE’s datasheet say about the BAIC X55 Verve HEV?

DOE specs: BAIC X55 Verve HEV

According to the government agency, the BAIC X55 Verve HEV will come in two different trims. One is simply called the X55 Verve HEV, and the other is dubbed the X55 Verve HEV Sport. 

At the moment, it was not shown how these two differ, but both are front-wheel-drive rides that are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine linked to a single permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM).

The aforementioned goes together with an “Intelligent Range Extension System” automatic transmission, a 1.83-kilowatt-hour (kWh) ternary lithium battery, and a regenerative braking system. 

On its own, the turbocharged mill mentioned above can put out 214 horsepower (hp), while the single PMSM adds a further 95 hp. 

Additionally, the DOE indicated that the BAIC X55 Verve HEV will have the following dimensions:

Gross vehicle weight	1,975 kilograms

Per the government agency, other notable features on the five-seater hybrid crossover include, but are not limited to:

• Advanced driver assist systems (ADAS)
• 12.3-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay
• Eight-piece speaker set
• Polyurethane
• Ambient lighting
• Power-adjustable driver’s seat
• Power tailgate
• LED exterior lighting
• Rain-sensing wipers
• Wireless smartphone charging pad
• Head-up display

For now, BAIC Philippines has not officially declared a launch date for the X55 Verve HEV. But, its recent appearance on DOE’s database could be indicative of an impending launch. So, stay tuned.
