Bentley debuts all-electric Torcal

MANILA: Bentley has officially launched the Torcal as its first-ever all-electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) offering. 

The nameplate is the luxury marque’s fourth model line and is produced at Bentley’s Crewe headquarters in the United Kingdom. 

Notably, the Bentley Torcal is being touted as a crucial offering from the Crewe-headquartered company, touted as the benchmark for Bentley’s future models. And yes, this will cover all powertrain types.

“For 107 years, Bentleys have been the most incredibly complete cars - effortless performance, outstanding comfort, exquisite British handcraftsmanship using the best natural materials, and a soundtrack with soul,” Bentley Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser said. 

“Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters,” Walliser added.

Powertrain

Propelling the Bentley Torcal is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system paired with an 113-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery consisting of 192 individual lithium-ion pouch cells. With these components, the Torcal can produce up to 875 horsepower and 1,350 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. 

For the high-spec Bentley Torcal S (Sporting), this output allows a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 2.8 seconds. Likewise available to the Torcal S’ rear motor is a locking differential. 

Ride quality for the all-electric SUV is ensured by a fully active suspension that can adjust its sensitivity and height depending on the drive mode. Further enhancing its drive is an all-wheel steering system and front/rear disc brakes. The latter can be upgraded to carbon-silicon-carbide ceramic discs with customizable calipers via Mulliner. 

Concerning range, Bentley says that the Torcal can cover up to 600 kilometers on a single full charge. It can also be charged from 10-80 percent in just 20 minutes. 

Exterior

Appearance-wise, the Bentley Torcal is a very upright SUV that combines a squarish nose reminiscent of the EXP 15 concept with a high-roofed but very muscular-looking body. 

Per Bentley, the key to the Torcal’s look is its proportions, which embody “upright elegance” combined with a powerful stance. This was achieved, the company says, through a combination of a lengthy wheelbase, short overhangs, and a “proud frontal aspect.” 

As with most Bentleys, the model boasts a rather long bonnet, tipped by a squared-off flush panel that serves as its grille. These come with small LEDs that form a 3D diamond pattern. This is flanked by a pair of split quad LED headlamps with vertically stacked crystal-cut LED projector units. 

From the side, it has a seamless window line, a sweeping roof, and bulging rear haunches wider than the ones up front. Towards the rear is a minimalist look with an integrated diffuser with high-gloss carbon bits, a pair of thin wraparound LED taillights, and a prominent roof-mounted spoiler.

Wrapping up the appearance of the Bentley Torcal is a set of 21-22-inch wheels, with the larger one coming with a ten-twin-spoke aerodynamic design. 

Interior

Inside the all-new Bentley Torcal is a five-seater layout featuring 16-way power-adjustable front seats with cooling and massage, automatic seat climate and postural adjustment, and sustainably sourced materials (recycled walnut wood veneer, merino wool).

Style-wise, the Torcal’s cockpit, particularly the Sporting variant, appears very driver-centric, with a curved, fully digital display, an illuminated curation controller, physical controls for the automatic climate control system, and an augmented-reality head-up display for navigation and facial scanning for automatic driver-centric adjustments. 

Its main display, meanwhile, is a 12.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This works in tandem with a highly advanced Dynamic Waterfall Lighting system with more than 450 LEDs inside the doors and lower instrument panel to provide several mood themes.

With its robust sound system (from a 16-speaker set to an optional Naim 28-speaker package), the Torcal provides a human-generated soundtrack that functions as feedback to the driver. This goes on top of its usual music-playing functions. 

Safety

Safety-wise, the Bentley Torcal relies on advanced driver-assist systems supported by radar, ultrasonic sensors, 360-degree digital perimeter-mapping cameras, and A-pillar driver monitors. 

Key ADAS systems include, but are not limited to: 

• Hands-free adaptive cruise control (dependent on market)
• Advanced reversing assist
• Remote parking assist
• Garage memory function

Bentley didn’t list down the Torcal’s full safety suite, but we can surmise that it comes with what you’d expect from a modern all-electric SUV. 

Price, availability

Although already debuted, the Bentley Torcal is expected to roll out to the company’s dealerships in Europe sometime in 2027. If one remembers, Bentley recently revealed that it is retooling its historic 1930s-era factory in Crewe, England, for a new production line dedicated to the all-new electric vehicle (EV). 

There’s also no official word yet on a global rollout, but for a crucial nameplate like this, we are guessing Bentley will want to introduce it on a wide scale.
