Nissan Rogue Hybrid is US market’s equivalent of the X-Trail

MANILA: Nissan has unveiled the all-new Rogue Hybrid in the United States. This is the brand’s first-ever model to have the third-generation e-Power technology for the said market. And yes, this uses the same bones as the recently launched Philippine-spec Nissan X-Trail e-Power, albeit with some stark differences to its powertrain specs, exterior, and interior. 

For the unaware, the Japanese marque combined the Rogue and X-Trail nameplate into a single platform in 2014. The Rogue remained a North American model, whereas the X-Trail moniker was reserved for global-market products. In the current generation, the Rogue/X-Trail rides on the Renault–Nissan CMF-CD platform.

Vehicle specifications

The US-spec Nissan Rogue Hybrid uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-three gasoline engine paired with two electric motors and a battery. 

With it being an e-Power system, the three-banger’s function is to generate electricity for the battery, which in turn powers the vehicle’s motor. The only source of propulsion for the car is its electric motor. So, while it is designated as a hybrid, it can demonstrate electric-vehicle (EV)-like driving characteristics. 

If one remembers, the locally available Nissan X-Trail has the same internal combustion component but only one electric motor. 

Thanks to its dual electric motors, the US-market Rogue Hybrid comes with an all-wheel-drive system. It is also peppier than the Philippine version, with its output of 225 horsepower. The front motor provides up to 329 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque, the ICE motor can produce 195 Nm, while the rear electric motor can generate up to 232 Nm. 

Other noteworthy mechanical bits of the US-spec Nissan Rogue Hybrid include a regenerative braking system, the e-Pedal one-pedal driving system, and the Smooth Stop automatic brake modulation system.

Appearance-wise, the American Nissan Rogue Hybrid looks more futuristic compared to the X-Trail sold locally. It gets a wider honeycomb grille with integrated LED lamps, sharp-edge fenders with sculpted details on the sides, and a very angular-looking rear end with full-width LED taillights. 

Inside the US-spec Rouge Hybrid is a tech-heavy cabin equipped with space for up to five occupants. Notably, its automatic air-conditioning has physical toggles, a rounder take on the flat-bottom steering wheel design, and plenty of eye candy from polished trim and soft-touch materials. 

Of particular note is its 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which can be upgraded to a huge 14.3-inch display depending on the vehicle trim. The larger unit comes with built-in Google Maps, the Play Store, and the Google Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant. 

Higher-spec trims also get dual-wireless smartphone charging pads and a 10-piece Bose Premium speaker set. 

Further enhancing the interior of this model are a pair of Nissan Zero Gravity front seats with power-adjustability and ventilation, acoustic-laminated glass, a 64-color ambient lighting system, and a total of 1,866 liters of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. 

Safety-wise, the US-spec Nissan Rogue Hybrid was equipped with the latest generation of the ProPILOT Assist suite of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS). 

The aforementioned includes, but is not limited to: 

• Intelligent Cruise Control
• Steering assist
• Auto lane change
• Hands-off traffic jam support
• Automatic emergency braking
• Blind spot warning
• Lane departure warning
• Intelligent lane intervention
• Lead car departure notification

These components are supported by a new front radar sensor, a wider front camera, and updated software. Its Intelligent Around View monitor was also upgraded to deliver high-definition video. 

US market Nissan Rogue Hybrid: there’s plenty to like

The Nissan X-Trail e-Power, which is already available locally with a starting price of P2.29 million, is a very well-specced vehicle. On the one hand, there’s definitely plenty to like about the US-spec Nissan Rogue Hybrid. 

For one thing, it has all-wheel-drive - something that may be useful for local drivers who frequent dirt and rocky roads. And of course, the US model detailed above comes with a lot of tech that may prove to be a hit with the younger techie crowd. 

However, we are not sure if Nissan Philippines will bring a “higher-spec” version of the locally sold X-Trail e-Power that is at least on par with the US model Rogue any time soon. But, here’s to hoping.
