Honda, Ford, BMW to establish firm focused on EV grid services

MANILA: American Honda Motor Corporation Incorporated, Ford Motor Company, and BMW Group collaborated to establish Chargescape, LLC, a company that will develop a single platform connecting electric utilities, car manufacturers, and potential electric vehicle (EV) buyers.

Chargescape will cater both EV customers and the electric utility industry in the United States and Canada. The company aims to usher in a new value that EVs can offer to the electric grid, while giving EV owners financial benefits through charging and energy-sharing services.

The single platform to be created by Chargescape will eliminate the need for individual integrations between each car brand and each electric utility. It will give electric utilities access to battery energy across a wide variety of EV units.

Since high levels of EV owners enrollment are anticipated, the services are expected to be cost-effective for electric utilities.

With EV sales and infrastructure continuously increasing, Chargescape aims to provide energy management services to support grid resiliency while still benefiting both EV owners and electric utilities.

"Electric grid reliability and sustainability are the foundation for an EV-powered future. Chargescape aims to accelerate the expansion of smart charging and vehicle-to-everything solutions all over the country while increasing customer benefits, supporting the stability of the grid, and helping maximize renewable energy usage," BMW of North America Vice President for Engineering Thomas Ruemenapp stated.

The company also aims to help reduce the personal carbon footprint of EV owners by using electricity from readily available renewable sources such as solar or wind.

"Electric vehicles are unlocking entirely new benefits for customers that can save them money while supporting grid resiliency and increasing the use of clean, renewable energy. Chargescape will help accelerate the true potential of the EV revolution by providing significant benefits to both utilities and EV customers through smart vehicle-to-grid services," Ford Motor Company Global Head of Charging and Energy Services Bill Crider said.

"We are counting on this platform to create new value for our customers by connecting EVs to electric utilities, strengthening grid resources and carbon emissions," American Honda Motor Corporation Incorporated Vice President of Sustainability and Business Development Jay Joseph added. "With automakers accelerating toward the electrified future, we must find solutions like Chargescape to enable all stakeholders to work together for the good of our customers, society, and our industry by enabling greater use of renewable energy for and from mobility."

Chargescape is expected to begin operations early 2024.
