LTO fast-tracks license plate production

MANILA: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said that it is now speeding up the license plate production to reduce the backlog for motor vehicles and motorcycles.

According to LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, the agency has ordered around 15.9 million metal plates and already received around one million.

Mendoza said that it will take over two years to clear up the 13-million license plate backlog, which is mostly for motorcycles and replacement from old green plates to the new white plates.

The full production will begin next month. The LTO already has the machines that will be used in the embossing of the license plates. These machines — two robotic and nine semi-manual — can produce around 42,000 license plates daily.

Mendoza stated that clearing the backlog is the LTO’s top priority.

“Tinitiyak po natin sa ating mga kababayan na lulutasin natin ito sa lalong madaling panahon (We are assuring our countrymen that we will solve it as soon as possible). This is our main priority and we have been coordinating with Secretary Bautista on this matter),” he said.

Mendoza also vowed to distribute all of the unclaimed license plates before the end of the year.
