To be clear, the LTO defines a “suspension” as a temporary penalty that allows a driver’s license holder to return to “normal” status once the suspension period has elapsed.
A revocation, however, is a much heavier penalty, as it throws the license holder “back to zero” after the prescribed period. This means that one has to go through the entire application process again as a student driver before being given the opportunity to obtain a proper driver’s license. The one exemption, of course, is a permanent revocation.
From June 11 to July 4, 2026 alone, the LTO recorded 184 revocations and 94 suspensions due to various traffic violations. Per the agency, this demonstrates its continued efforts to enforce prevailing traffic laws and rules.
“Ang pinakamahalagang sukatan ng ating kampanya ay hindi ang dami ng lisensyang nasususpinde o nababawi, kundi ang pagdami ng mga motoristang sumusunod sa batas, [The most important indicator of our campaign is not the number of licenses that are suspended or revoked, but the number of motorists who are following the law>” LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said.
“Nananawagan tayo sa lahat na pairalin ang disiplina, paggalang sa kapwa, at responsableng pagmamaneho sa bawat biyahe, [We call on everyone to uphold discipline, respect for others, and responsible driving on every trip>.” Lacanilao added.
Other LTO updates
While the LTO’s efforts to curb the number of erring drivers are seen as a success, the agency received the most complaints in the first quarter of 2026. This is according to the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA).
Specifically, the agency received 152 complaints in the said time frame, although a majority of these were already resolved.
Earlier still, in April 2026, the LTO suspended the issuance of special plates. This was detailed via Memorandum Circular MVL-2026-5023, and it covers new special plates - the ones clients pay for to get “custom” numbers. The aforementioned suspension will be in effect until further notice.
