Mercedes-Benz 1000+ HP hypercar now in track testing phase
MANILA: The Mercedes-Benz Project One has now entered the next phase of its development as it begins doing fast laps at the automakers proving ground and technology center at Immendingen, Germany.
Unveiled at the 2017 International Motor Show in Germany by Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, Project One is a plug-in hybrid hypercar that will only have 275 units. Each costs US$ 2.72 million and every single one is already spoken for.
It will have a modified 1.6L turbocharged 90-degree V6 engine from the Mercedes-AMG F1 W07 F1 car allowing it to idle at 1,280 rpm and redline at 11,000 rpm. The engine will only last for 50,000 km, which means owners will have to bring their cars back to Mercedes-Benz for engine refurbishment.
From static test stands, Project One will now concentrate on test tracks. Testing of the comprehensively electrified and highly complex hybrid power unit with a full output of more than 1000 HP has now been authorized along with the unit’s active aerodynamics, from the louvers, the air outlets in the front fenders and the large rear spoiler.
Various vehicle systems are also being put through their paces on engine test beds and in the in-house simulator. The next step in this extensive program of testing and development is already clear will be the north loop of the Nürburgring.
