Mini highlights advanced safety tech behind its numerous 5-star safety ratings

MANILA: Mini has highlighted its success when it comes to providing safe cars by sharing in detail several of its latest in-house-developed array of advanced technologies. 

Notably, these are the ones that helped give five-star safety ratings from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) for the likes of the Mini Cooper, Aceman, and Countryman. The aforementioned also extends to the brand’s lineup of John Cooper Works and electrified variants. 

Pre-crash technologies

First off is Mini’s Pre-Crash technologies, which arguably form the core of its model’s safety capabilities. This is because they actually prevent collisions from happening in the first place, while enacting crucial and potentially life-saving measures in the event of a crash. 

As Mini itself has described, its pre-crash technologies rely on vast amounts of driving data, environmental information, and sensor inputs. In doing so, the system can determine whether the car is in the early stages of a crash. 

After early detection, the system can then activate minute but crucial adjustments to the car’s interior. This includes the automatic closing of windows and sliding roofs and the positioning of seat backrests. 

Notably, the Cooper, Aceman, and Countryman also get the Driving Assistant Plus, which provides additional advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) such as: 

• Steering control assist
• Lane control assist
• Adaptive cruise control with stop and go
• Automatic speed limit assist

Integrated sensors

Mini’s integrated sensors are likewise highlighted as they are crucial to the car’s overall active safety suite. Without them, the pre-crash technology mentioned above cannot collect data and make a decision to intervene. 

As the British marque shared, its array of data-collection gear for the Cooper, Aceman, and Countryman consists of 12 ultrasonic cameras, five standard cameras, and five radar systems. 

The aforementioned works in conjunction not just with its pre-collision technologies, but also with the brand’s other ADAS components listed above. The said sensors can also detect complex traffic flows such as at junctions/intersections, cover blind spots around a car, and track vulnerable road users (cyclists and pedestrians) as well. 

Parking assist

Mini also touted its parking assistant system as precise and particularly helpful in urban environments where parking areas can be tight. 

From the factory, the Mini parking assist system can help you reverse into or out of a spot, monitor the distance between your car and an obstacle (or another car), and even make adjustments to avoid fender benders. 

Of course, the said feature can be expanded with the optional 360-degree monitor and an anti-theft recorder. Depending on the market, select Mini models can even be controlled remotely via the Mini App to manage parking spots on one’s smartphone. 

Passive safety gear

Last but not least is Mini’s standard array of safety gear. These are the primary response systems during frontal, side, and rear impacts and are addressed by carefully designed crumple zones, a rigid body structure, and highly advanced seat restraint systems. 

Depending on the model and where it is sold, a typical Mini nameplate comes with up to nine airbags. Most of the brand’s cars also feature an active bonnet for pedestrian detection, a seatbelt reminder, and other safety-oriented components.
