Lane closure aimied to ensure safety of motorists as construction takes place

MMDA bares rerouting plans for MRT-7 launching activities

MANILA: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) shared its rerouting plans and temporary lane closures at the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) West and North Avenues in Quezon City following the scheduled girder launching activities of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 7.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the closed lanes become passable?

Per MMDA, the closed lanes will become passable from May 8-18.
  • During what hours will the specified lanes be closed?

The lanes will be closed from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
  • According to the agency, the said temporary road blockings “will ensure the safety of the motoring public as several heavy equipment and machinery will lift parts of a steel superstructure that will connect the MRT-7’s North EDSA turnback track along West Avenue.”

To mitigate the traffic expected to be caused by the said temporary road closures, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) sought assistance from the Quezon City Government and the MMDA.

On that note, traffic enforcers from MMDA and Quezon City government, as well as traffic marshals from DOTr’s private contractor, will be deployed to minimize traffic congestion. Further, traffic signages are also being installed to inform and guide motorists and other road users.

The agency anticipates heavy traffic during the day and vice versa.

“Minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA during nighttime but big impact on traffic is expected during full closure to give way to the construction activities,” MMDA Chairman Attorney Don Artes was quoted as saying.

    Scheduled closures

Along EDSA and North Avenue — MMDA noted — portions of the two outermost lanes on the northbound direction and the two innermost lanes on the southbound direction will be closed to vehicle traffic.

Per MMDA, the said lanes will serve as sites where tower support systems will be constructed for the girder launching activities.

“The closures will also ensure that motorists and commuters are not put in harm’s way while heavy equipment maneuvers during the lifting and launching works,” MMDA wrote in a press release.
