Peugeot begins gradual electrification with updated 3008, 5008 for Europe

MANILA: Starting in 2023, all Peugeot models will be available with electrified powertrains. In line with this goal, Peugeot has begun integrating mild-hybrid technology into the current generation 3008 and 5008 SUVs for the European market.

Recently, the carmaker also announced the arrival of five new electric vehicles. The two SUVs from the French manufacturer, Peugeot, will benefit from a fuel consumption decrease of up to 15% with the installation of a mild-hybrid system, as was announced during Peugeot's E-LION Day in late January.

2023 Peugeot 3008, 5008 Mild-Hybrid Fuel Efficiency

According to research conducted by Peugeot, the 3008 and 5008 SUVs use roughly 2.5 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers of city driving — equivalent to 40kpl — when equipped with a 48-volt system. There are no significant changes to note on the highway, where the two SUVs use the same amount of fuel as their non-hybrid counterparts. The mild hybrid powertrain in these vehicles reduced fuel consumption in the WLTP cycle by 1 liter for every 100 kilometers. Both automobiles' carbon emissions are reduced by 20 g/km on average.

2023 Peugeot 3008, 5008 Mild-Hybrid Powertrain

A brand-new, three-cylinder turbocharged engine has been created to power the pair of 2024 Peugeot 3008 and 5008. The 1.2-liter engine generates 230 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm and 134 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. The new power unit has a variable geometry turbocharger, a Miller combustion cycle engine, and a timing chain, all of which reduce maintenance costs.

The dual-clutch, six-speed automatic transmission housing the electric motor, inverter, and ECU is another new addition to the 3008 and 5008 models. An additional 28 horsepower and 55 Nm of torque can be produced by the electric motor, which can replace the engine when necessary.

The engine's other duty is to supply power to the 48V battery as the car slows down. The battery in question is a lithium-ion battery with a maximum usable capacity of 432 Wh. Peugeot made the hybridization of the contemporary SUVs possible by putting the battery pack behind the front seat, maintaining the same amount of cargo space as the equivalent pure gasoline model.

2023 Peugeot 3008, 5008 Mild-Hybrid Electric-Only Mode

Peugeot is installing an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) that activates at speeds of up to 30 km/h to warn pedestrians and cyclists since the hybrid 3008 and 5008 can momentarily operate in pure electric mode.

The new hybrid system will also be installed in other Peugeot vehicles, including the 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW, and 408. The new hybrid system will replace the PureTech 130 EAT8 powertrain. The Peugeot Sochaux factory in France will manufacture the new hybrid 3008 and 5008, and the electrified crossovers are anticipated to go on sale in Europe by the second quarter of the year.
