Skyway Extension NB construction to be finished by Dec.
MANILA: San Miguel Corporation (SMC), the principal of SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) concessionaire South Luzon Tollway Corporation, has announced that the northbound section of the Skyway Extension will be completed by December 2020.
Initially slated to be done last July, the target completion date for the section has been moved due to the enhanced community quarantine that was implemented in mid-March 2020. Contractors for SMC returned to work in May after a two-month lockdown, to push the construction schedule.
According to SMC president Ramon S. Ang, work is currently being done at an accelerated pace, especially from the Soldiers Hills area to the Sucat Mainline Toll Plaza in order to meet the December target.
“Because of the delays and restrictions brought on by the lockdown, we’ve had to make a lot of adjustments. But we are on track to deliver the entire northbound section of the Skyway Extension by end of this year. When we open this northbound section, motorists will enjoy smoother and faster trips from Calamba going to Makati and other parts of Metro Manila. By improving traffic flow and reducing congestion, this project will also help in accelerating trade and tourism, particularly south of Metro Manila. That is something we need to further help our economy during this pandemic, and after it,” said Ang.
The Skyway on-ramp section before Sucat in the vicinity of Amkor Anam has been closed starting yesterday at 10 a.m. to allow workers to install the remaining bored piles from Piers 1-7. Currently, 85 bored piles have already been put in place.
Even with the closure, northbound Class 1 vehicles may continue to access the steel ramp towards the elevated section of the Skyway. Class 2 vehicles including buses and vans meanwhile are advised to take the at-grade section.
A new traffic scheme and its schedule has been laid out by the Skyway Management and it is as follows:
Open 24/7
- Steel Ramp – Open to Class 1 only: ETC and cash-paying motorists going northbound.
- Hillsborough Southbound Ramp
- Alabang - Zapote Southbound Ramp
Open from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. only
- Steel Ramp Southbound
Open from 9:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. the next day
- Alabang-Zapote Northbound Ramp
Motorists are being advised that the traffic scheme and schedule may be changed from time to time depending on traffic volume. They can check @SkywaySOMCO and @OfficialSLEX for more up-to-date advisories.
The entire Skyway Extension Project is expected to be delivered by middle of 2021, including the southbound section from Sucat to Soldiers Hills.
