Used EV batteries can serve as alternative power source

ZHUHAI, CHINA: As new-energy vehicle (NEV) distributors in the Philippines are hounded by issues that surround proper battery disposal, the Ayala group is already finding ways that will give used electric vehicle (EV) batteries a new purpose.

In a chance interview, AC Motors Automobile Group President Antonio Zara III said that the conglomerate is discussing the possibility with technology partners that will help put up a system to reuse the batteries fitted on current EV models.

To note, AC Motors has already fielded NEV models in the market: the BYD Han, Tang, and Dolphin as well as the Kia EV6 They are also set to introduce the Atto 3 within the month.

"We are looking at turning these used EV batteries as storage packages for alternative power sources like solar power panels," Zara said in chance conversation with Zigwheels Philippines.

Zara explained that used EV batteries will only have a decreased power storage capacity; its electric current output remains the same.

Once repurposed, the move will further reduce pollution that will push the cause of electrification further in protecting the environment.

However, Zara admitted that the main challenge would be the collection of the used car batteries would be tedious.

For the batteries to be extracted from an EV, units have to be lifted since the portion is fitted underneath vehicles. Aside from that, not all EV owners would have the time to surrender the batteries to facilities that are willing to repurpose the scrap material.
