Volkswagen gives the Golf a 1.0L turbo engine that returns 22.5 km/l
MANILA: Just months after making the eighth-generation Golf available, Volkswagen wasted no time in expanding the engine options and has now introduced a trim with a 1.0L three-cylinder TSI turbocharged engine.
This is a detuned version of the same engine presented at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and has also been used in the previous generation Golf, the Polo and in the up! for which it won International Engine of the Year in 2018.
The trim is called Golf Life and it comes only with a six-speed manual transmission and uses variable turbocharger geometry to put out 108 HP. It goes from 0-100 kilometers per hour in 10.2 seconds all the way to a speed of 203 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption based on internal testing is 21 km/l - 22.5 km/l
Volkswagen will introduce a mild hybrid version of this 1.0L turbo engine at a later date.
The current Golf now comes with these engine options:
1.5L gasoline engine
2.0L diesel engine
1.5L eTSI mild-hybrid
1.0L TSI with variable geometry turbocharger
1.0L TSI mild-hybrid (coming soon)
“One of the many reasons for its (Golf) success is the way it offers compelling value for money, and this entry-point to the Golf 8 range is a great example. Featuring the latest technology and highest levels of quality – along with class-leading efficiency – this new 1.0-litre TSI 110 PS option brings the possibility of new Golf ownership to even more people,” said Dale Piper, Golf Product Manager at Volkswagen UK.
Volkswagen Philippines previously made the Golf available in the country. In 2015, the 2.0L turbo was priced at around Php 2.290 million. Pricing and market interest could have been factors that led the automaker to shift its offerings in the country.
Could the 1.0L turbocharged Golf, which is priced in the UK at £23,300 (Php 1.457 million), change the automaker and the market’s mind?
