Petronas denies involvement in PH LGU fuel supply deal

MANILA: Malaysian oil firm Petronas has denied entering in an agreement with a local government unit in the Philippines. 

The clarification was issued after Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib said that the province is currently in talks with the King of Malaysia for the purchase of 44 million liters of diesel amid the ongoing crisis in the country. 

“Petronas wishes to clarify that it is not aware of, nor involved in, any such arrangement, and has not entered into any related agreement or commitment,” the firm noted in a statement.

Further, the company noted that its immediate focus is to ensure that “reliable and continuous fuel supply” is available in its home country. “This remains its utmost priority, supported by established supply networks and close coordination with the Government,” it added. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Energy shared that the country had already ordered 1.042 million barrels of fuel from various sources. This is expected to arrive next month. Last March 26, 142,000 barrels of fuel arrived from Japan. 

Further, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin noted that the country’s national supply of petroleum products is being replenished every 10 days.
