Zigwheels PH weekly wrap: Jul. 20-24

MANILA: Last week proved quite eventful, with a handful of model launches from both legacy brands and new industry players. There were also sneak peeks of upcoming models that Filipino car and motorcycle buyers should watch out for. 

On that note, here are the biggest news stories this week.

Local launches 

Jaecoo J5 EV 

Not too long after its debut at the Manila International Auto Show, the Jaecoo J5 EV has made its official Philippine launch. 

Available in a sole variant and offered with a sticker price of P1.399 million, it packs a single permanent magnet synchronous motor that makes 207 horsepower (hp) and 288 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. 

Ford Ranger, Everest 

Ford Philippines has launched limited-edition variants of the Ranger and Everest.

The Ford Ranger Sport+ 4x4 offers a black sport bar, matte black fender flares, and the F-O-R-D grille for P1.999 million, while the Everest Titanium+ 4x4 with Power Side Steps comes with power side steps that were previously available solely on higher-priced models like the Ford Expedition for P2.64 million.   

Kia Sportage   

Returning to the local crossover sport utility (SUV) segment is the Kia Sportage. 

The nameplate — offered with an introductory price of P1.898 million for the entry-level trim — uses a 1.6-liter Gamma II turbocharged gasoline engine with a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a 1.49 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. 

It makes some 231 hp and 367 Nm of pulling power.  

BMW X3 30e xDrive xLine PHEV  

The premium auto market just got a new competitor in the form of the BMW X3 30e xDrive xLine PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicle). 

Priced at P4.498 million, the electrified SUV produces some 299 horses and 450 Nm thanks to its gasoline engine with an advanced electric drive system.  

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, all-new Hilux 

Toyota Motor Philippines started the retail sale of the Land Cruiser FJ and all-new Hilux.  

With a starting price of P2.235 million, the former is propelled by a 2.7-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline engine that is capable of producing up to 161 hp and 246 Nm. 

The latter, on the other hand, starts at P1.772 million and is powered by either a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV four-cylinder Variable Nozzle Turbo diesel engine or a dual-motor electric drivetrain with power ranging from 196 to 201.2 horses and pulling power from 269 to 500 Nm. 

Honda smartphone app 

While not exactly a vehicle launch, the motorcycle arm of Honda Cars Philippines Incorporated has rolled out the MyHonda+ PH app. 

There, Honda Philippines Incorporated also showcased the WN7, which uses an electric motor and 9.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery combo providing 67.5 hp and 100 Nm. 

Upcoming releases 

Nissan Philippines will release the updated Kicks e-Power next month, while GAC Philippines teased its trifecta of multi-purpose vehicles. 

Meanwhile, VinFast Philippines will officially launch its electric motorcycle division, highlighting the Viper electric motorbike. Lurking behind is Chetak, which will roll out the C3505.
