LTO Chief recommends cancellation of BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge

MANILA: Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao recommended the cessation of the BMW Owners Society of Safe Riders (BOSS) Ironman Motorcycle Challenge, citing that the supposed “tourism-related” endurance challenge is no longer about promoting local travel.

Of note, the agency issued a show-cause order to the organization after videos and images of the recent event surfaced online.

“Ang recommendation po namin dito sa LTO eh itigil na yang ganyang endurance challenge kasi hindi na po ito tourism e (Our recommendation here at LTO is to stop this kind of endurance challenge because it's no longer about tourism),” Lacanilao was in a report.

In addition, LTO’s head honcho demanded that the event’s organizer surrender his driver’s license while investigations involving fatalities and traffic violations regarding the recent endurance challenge are ongoing.

“Hindi, i-surrender mo yung driver’s license mo. O gusto mong i-alarm ko ‘yang driver’s license mo kung ayaw mong i-surrender? (No, surrender your driver’s license. Or do you want me to put your driver’s license in “alarm” if you don’t want to surrender it?),” Lacanilao told event organizer, who complied.

In a previous report, Zigwheels Philippines noted that, according to the LTO, some of the violations noted by the agency included “overspeeding, use of unauthorized vehicle accessories and modifications, illegal blinkers, failure to stop at red lights and disregard for road signs, including mandatory stop signs and lane markers.”

Unfortunately, the event led to the alleged death of a seven-year-old child and a participant of the event.
